When it comes to barnacles in spongebob, i have a theory that the writers use these to expose a larger issue in the show and society itself.

The barnacle theory goes in superposition with the Crab Meat Theory. Remember Mr Crabs daughter is the only "heir" to his business, and SpongeBob is a good Chef, but he stills needs a "push" for Crabs to reasure his business. And so coincidentially happens for the daughter.
