Jockey Elizabeth Gale has received a 28-day ban after appearing to mistake the half-furlong pole for the winning line while riding Catuaba at Worcester.

She was ruled to have failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on a horse that would’ve finished first.

I watched the race and it was obvious she mistook the half furlong post for the finishing line, it was an honest mistake but hard to defend . They need to get rid of that half furlong marker, it’s not necessary.
This jockey has ridden hundreds of races professionally and never had an incident before, I’m sure there’s no one more disappointed by the error than herself, she’ll be gutted for herself, the owners and the trainer and of course the horse which ran such a great race, it’s really a sad incident .

It's not harsh, it should have been a longer ban, what she did was wrong, and you can't excuse it by saying she's an amateur, that is no excuse, she should know where the line is, and drove for that, she dropped her hands about 80 yards from the line, bloody disgrace

The thing is, she did brilliantly to get the horse to kick on again when the other came alongside…and then must have had a mind blank passing the 1/2 furlong marker that looks nothing like a winning post 😮

Imagine having your last money on that

She probably don’t get a ride for 28 days at a time so she won’t miss anything.

Lets all be real here, being a jockey is a dangerous job but not a difficult job. To Not understand the simple fundamentals of where the winning post is on a race track is inexcusable! To say that she "mistakenly" thought that 1/2 furlong marker was the winning post would only be down to 2 things possible;

1. She was closing her eyes when driving the horse to the finish.
2. She is short-sighted or is colour blind.

The 1/2 Furlong pole is clearly written and the winning post has a big red circle on top on it!

A 28 day ban is far too lenient for those who backed the 2nd and should've have won their bets! There is 0 justice for punters who lost on the 2nd horse.

In snooker, there were years of suspension and lifetime bans on players that match fixed or involved in match fixing.

If Horse Racing wants to reduce this type of scenario happening again, they need to do the same in order for these jockeys to take their jobs more seriously and think twice before dropping their hands or not riding out a finish properly...Simples!

FYI - I didn't even have a bet in this race, but I have been in this situation far too many times as a punter in the past, and clearly this stupidity is still happening in the sport!

Easy to punish the less well known names isn't it?

It's an honest mistake as she clearly mistakes the winning post - she deserves the ban but it just highlights how lucky Doyle was as he was trying to be clever and this was just one of those unfortunate incidents.

Doyle should have had the book thrown at him but got nothing.

Corruption even in the lower ranks but nothing compares to de sousa last week

But Doyle lies to the stewards and the media and gets completely away with it! Doyles was actually much worse because he was being cocky and arrogant whilst here the jockey mistook the finish line.
Doyle should've got 280 days!

Harsh, she's listed as an amatuer jockey, guess what, ? they are listed as an amatuer so that punters take into account they may make more errors, much like a learner driver. If punters are too thick to take that into account and then cry like 5 year old girls then they are just laughable and probably lost their 20 pence e.w

I seen jockey's do much worse and had a slap on the wrist!! So Unfair!!

Polo mint sized winning post. Why don't they get one that is easier to see when the jockeys are in a tight finish?

Why dont they just remove half furlong poles, then their would be no confusion as to where the winning post is. Its not rocket sience.

Even experienced Jockeys make stupid mistakes. In the 1957 Kentucky Derby, Bill Shoemaker on Gallant Man was way ahead of the field when he mistook the final 1/8th pole as the Finish line. He stood up in the stirrups to slow Gallant Man down. He didn't realize his mistake until Iron Liege blew past him. He tried to rally Gallant Man but it was too late. Gallant Man went on to win the Belmont Stakes in June of that year (Bold Ruler took the '57 Preakness).

She's young and she made a mistake, she'll learn from it.
Unlike the experts on here, who have never made a mistake in their lives 🤦‍♂️

Can all jockeys just take a leaf out of William Buick's ride on Vauban in the Lonsdale Cup at York, he actually kept riding just passed the line, come on jockey's, it's not hard is it?
