Mimi Staker graduated from the School of American Ballet in this first season of Teen Vogue’s Strictly Ballet. This year she’s been hired as a professional dancer for New York City Ballet—her dream come true.

I think what makes a truly great dancer, particularly, is charisma - that elusive quality that is hard to define and impossible to acquire through just training - it takes courage besides the almost insane level of dedication to the art.  First you have to learn all the rules - the technique, to perfection.  Then you have to learn to break said rules in a way that brings and audience to its feet mid-performance.  That is great dance!

I don’t know how but when I’m dancing I feel so free. It’s like I’m glued to the ground and flying at the same time. I’m not balanced in day to day life but when I’m doing pirouettes I feel like I could turn forever and never stop. It’s almost like the world goes blank and Its only me. It’s almost a religion to dance, for me atleast.
