the army of Gamma Beasts all look like Giganto, the Mole Man's monster from Fantastic Four #1. Them all going to Banner's island at the end reminded me of Monster Island from FF, too.

Sam talking about hail Mary's and other sports terms are a reference to Anthony Mackie's history of playing sports in college. He said in an interview with James Corden that he used to play football in college as a linebacker, but he saw the opposing linebacker player one day and said, "Never seen a white dude this big in my life." And after coming into contact with this linebacker, Anthony Mackie switched to theater and became an actor right then and there. Although in his 2015 film "The Night Before" Mackie does play a 34-year-old football player.

The Apex Hulk is based on the Titan Hulk and the gamma critical Hulk is based on Kluh, with both of them being versions of Hulk's "hulked out" form.

the episode itself is a reference to the original what if comics. In vol 2 issue #71 we got "What if the gamma bomb spawned a thousand hulks"

in terms of hulk like monsters ravaging the world in a gamma war (they were created when the us used a gamma bomb instead on an atomic bomb during wwii)

I like how at the end Sam is talking to Hulk's eyeball. How far away are Hulk's ears? In my head cannon, Bruce is just confused by having a giant blurry Sam in one eye but he doesn't understand because he's too quiet.
