Hey theatre friends! It's me, Kat, and today we're FINALLY doing it! We're talking about the highly anticipated #DearEvanHansen movie musical!

This project has long been in the works and fans everywhere have eagerly been anticipating updates. Since the movie was announced, rumors began swirling that #BenPlatt and Kaitlyn Dever would be joining the cast as Evan and Zoe. Well this month, we got our first few confirmed cast members for the #DEH film including Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan, and Amandla Stenberg! Then we got two more just two days ago: Amy Adams and Danny Pino! In those articles, many outlets casually mentioned Ben and Kaitlyn's involvement in the DEAR EVAN HANSEN movie .... but are they for sure confirmed for the film? Where is this info coming from? And why haven't we received a separate, formal announcement if it *is* true?

Some background info on DEAR EVAN HANSEN, via wikipedia:
Dear Evan Hansen is a stage musical with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and book by Steven Levenson.The musical opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016, after its world premiere at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in July 2015 and an Off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre from March to May 2016. At the 71st Tony Awards, it was nominated for nine awards, winning six, including Best Actor in a Musical for Ben Platt, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Rachel Bay Jones, Best Musical, and Best Score.The musical has its origins in an incident that took place during Pasek's high school years at Friends' Central School. The musical "...takes the notion of a teenager, Platt's Evan Hansen, who invents an important role for himself in a tragedy that he did not earn." There were several readings prior to the first stage production: in May 2014 at Pearl Studios (New York), July 2014 at Chelsea Studios (New York) and September 2014 at Manhattan Movement and Arts Studio (New York). A full workshop took place in March 2015 at Gibney Dance Center. The project was initially called The PPL Project. Ben Platt was involved in all of the readings and the workshop.

Do you think Ben & Kaitlyn are *for sure* in the movie, or do you think it's still just a rumor? 👕👕 (BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: some news outlets are now saying that Danny Pino will play a new character that is stepfather to the Murphy children, *not* Larry!)

The stepfather thing is so dumb, The whole point of DEH is that Connor has everything. A picture perfect family until he kills himself and that Evan dosent. he has a dad that left and a mom that dosen't get to pay alot of attention to him. Making Larry Connor's stepdad defeats the purpose.

Personally, I’m not thrilled they changed Mr. Murphy to the stepdad. I think it will make his role and his connection to both Connor and Evan a little weaker, and I feel like it will impact his parts in Requiem and most obviously To Break in a Glove. Also, I think it will impact the family dynamics since the Murphy’s are supposed to be a sort of no flaws family until Connor commits suicide. I don’t know, we’ll see what they do with it but I don’t think it was smart.

As much as I ADORE Ben, If they want Evan to be a teen, just hire Andrew. Andrew has experience as Evan, is pretty young, and if they cast him, they can maybe cast Mallroy as Zoe. Either way, I hope this movie is good.

I feel like with Larry as the stepfather it makes the fact that he wasn’t really close with Connor pointless because it’s pretty common for step parents to have strained relationships with their stepchildren. That’s just my opinion though.

I'm concerned about the choice to make Connor have a step-father and making him from a broken home, because it puts out a message that only children from broken homes or with rough childhoods suffer from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The broadway version has a message about how anyone can suffer from mental health issues wether they come from wealthy loving families like Connors or from poor single parented homes. I think by making them both from broken homes makes the message and the show less relatable. Especially for my connection to the show I'm sad that they changed Connor and Zoes home life and really overall story. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts can affect anybody no matter their background or family situation. I wish they didn't make that change because it was such a powerful message to see a family seemingly perfect like the Murphys that still delay with the loss of a child and showed that depression is an ILLNESS and anyone can suffer from it. Idk thats my perspective on it I'm sure others have different perspectives and thats great, but for me its a really sad change mainly because of my personal connection to the Murphys story.

I don’t really like that they made Larry a stepfather now. Him just being their dad made the character more complex it seemed like an old broken family that used to be amazing but sort of burned out. It seems kind of unnecessary. With him now being their stepfather, it just takes away the relatable sense of the inevitable distance that creeps into longtime relationships. It also defeats the theme of how you never know how much someone is struggling mentally, because Connor kills himself even with the picture perfect family. I kind of hate it lmao

QOTD: I know I have no control over it but I kinda hop Andrew Barth Feldman will play Evan. I saw him as Evan in January and he was FANTASTIC. he also looks young enough (and IS young enough)

I’m against Larry being changed to stepfather, and here’s why:

- The family was supposed to perfect, other than Connor’s suicide that destroyed them.

- Larry have off the vibe that he HAD to be the biological father, and kept trying to connect with his son. It just doesn’t feel right with a Stepfather.

- If he’s the stepfather, then there’s gonna have to be a change in the narrative. And more context. Like, were Zoe and Connor close to the biological father? Was he dead? Did Zoe or Connor experience any trauma from him? Did they fight? Why did Cynthia break up/divorce the biological father? When did the break-up happen?

- Connor and Larry’s relationship would have to change in a way. In the musical, it seems that Larry is upset/disappointed in Connor. And it seemed like Larry and Connor had a bad relationship.

My point is...
THEY’LL NEED TO ADD MORE CONTEXT.
