LOTR: Viggo Mortensen´s impressive sword fighting skills!

Viggo Mortensen was cast as Aragon after filming had begun, leaving him very little time to prepare for the role, particularly in sword fighting! Despite this, he received an intensive crash course from swordmaster Bob Anderson and ultimately became one of the most accomplished swordsmen Anderson had ever worked with!

you NEVER hear people say anything bad about viggo. He commits himself to the roles he plays. iirc people have called him "no ego viggo". so many stories of what he did for others during this film. a very humble man

And to think he deflected a real, thrown dagger at him in filming the same movie. Major growth and accomplishment

Viggo is a real renaissance man. Viggo is Aragorn.

Another irony is that one of the reasons that Stewart Townsend was canned as Aragorn was that he wasn't willing to do the advance training or prep work. He kept saying, "We'll pick it up on the day." Viggo had to start out with a crash cram course and then had to pick it up on the day. Viggo then went on to spend his off time and time between filming to learn what the others been able to work on for several months. Viggo really worked on riding and bonding with the high energy war horses that he had to ride.

He really is the Chosen One. Thrown into the role without any prep and still pulling off some of the best scenes in all three movies. He’s a horse whisperer too.

And you can't even tell he's new to it, that scene was amazing

Viggo will always be Aragorn for me. One of my favorite actors and simply the best cast in Lord of the Rings! Absolute god tier!

Viggo really was the King on set. Everybody held him in such high regard.

Viggo is a true legend. They could not have picked anyone better. He is Aragorn.

All these great little hidge stories of Viggo are amazing. But I always love the fact that he was requested or encouraged to bring his sword when he dined in villages/cities near filming sites. And would at times go right off of set. I can imagine after the fellowship of the ring dropped. Aragorn spawning in full dress up with a sword, starting to munch down on a double cheeseburger next to you, with Viggo's car-wash danish accent would've been something to behold.

Lucky Viggo! He got to learn from the best! I also love how I hear he took his sword with him *everywhere* he went during filming, even when not doing a shoot. That's dedication!

Dude i would absolutely watch a full documentary of Viggo Mortensen just doing the stuff he does during the making of these films

This also explains why he kept holding on to the sword even when shooting was done so he could REALLY let it set in and get as comfortable as possible with the sword, especially with the length

Seeing all these behind the scenes and commentaries, makes me think that this isn't an ordinary film making but also a camp for the actors to become the best version of themselves, or even unlock some of their hidden potentials 😆

Viggo is a man of innumerable talents including fluency in a plethora of languages. No surprise that he was a quick study and became a virtual master of his craft.
