Why does it matter that Aragorn is 87? What does that do for the character? It's a very cool scene because of the depth it adds to Aragorn's adventurous past, which bolsters his coolness in our eyes. But its his specific history Eowyn mentions that matters for the events of Two Towers. Aragorn rode to war with Thengel, father of Theoden. He knew the current king of Rohan when he was a small boy. Now Aragorn is back in Edoras to advise this younger man on matters of the upcoming war with Saruman. But Theoden doesn't listen to Aragorn. The dynamic of that relationship is now much different with the deleted scene than it would be without it. Because Aragorn is no mere ranger in our eyes, he is Theoden's senior, a figure Theoden associates with his late father. Theoden refusing the advice of an elder puts a much different spin on the king's stubbornness.

The whole age dynamic also makes Boromir’s actions way more excusable. He’s the youngest of the fellowship but lived a war filled life, of course he’d want the power to change that.

Theodin (71 at his death): "I am very old and have fought many battles, I don't need your council"
Meanwhile is speaking to:
Aragorn, 87
Gimli, 139
Legolas, 2391
Gandalf, literally older than Middle Earth itself.

I love the bit of weariness Viggo injects when he says 87

Another cool thing about Aragorn's age is that he was about 10 years old during the events of The Hobbit, and living in Rivendell. Perhaps this is the first time he met Bilbo.

This is one of those scenes that I really wish they hadn't cut. It's small but really changes his character in so many subtle ways.

Aragorn to Theodin: Listen you little sh**.

It's not that Aragorn is oblivious or doesn't care about how others see him; in fact he's fully aware how Eowyn feels about him and lets her down gently. He just doesn't want to exploit that perception for his own vanity.

I think an important thing to consider in Tolkien’s world is that age doesn’t mean as much. Sure yeah, Aragorn is 87. Gimli though is 139 years old, Legolas is 2931 years old and Gandalf despite only arriving in Middle-Earth 2000 years ago is as a Maia more like 24000 years old (edit, he literally existed before time itself, so according to the wiki, he should be 54 960 years old). So Theoden REALLY isn’t listening to his elders in this situation…

Basically a legend from Theodin's past came back to save his kingdom.

Aragorn is the coolest character ever, and Vigo is such a perfect person to be Aragorn!

He could have lived past 300 years old but that woman's bloody stew shortened my boy's life to just 210.

Theoden: Noooo!

Aragorn: Back in my day, we listened to the magical old man and the critters from the forest!

Imagine being called a stubborn kid, then around 70 to 80 year pass, you're an elderly King now, and the same guy who called you a stubborn kid walks up and still thinks you're a stubborn kid. The amount of disrespect is palpable.

"You must be...eighteen? Nineteen?"
(RoP) Galadriel, sneering: "Actually, I'm over a thousand years old."
"I guess some elves mature _very_ slowly then..."

“Young stubborn kid” I mean, gotta remember, he’s a grown ass man and a king too. Even Aragon understood that and respected his choice. He even defended Theoden’s choice when Gimli said something about it.

Aragon is old enough to be Theoden's father, and Theoden knows this, even met him as a young child. It's incredible how much that reframes that scene, I really didn't think of it like that!

Edit: five months later, and the conversations have turned into an argument about faith and beliefs. Because no one can ever just say something about their beliefs without another person deciding to mock them.

I've always just enjoyed the humour of this scene, imagining Eowin's internal monologue- "OMG! I've been crushing on an old man?!?"
This is definitely a more scholarly take though. 🤣

I strive to be like Aragorn, literally my favorite character in all of LotR. He’s courages, humble, wise, and honorable. He is the epitome of what a “man” should be.

I can’t watch this scene without remembering Aragon trying to pour out Eowyn’s ‘cooking’ from his bowl but instead spilling it on himself when she suddenly turns back around

And he's still WAY too young for Arwen, who was already thousands of years old when they first met.
Ara-ara-wen.
