I read both 1984 and Animal Farm in high school. I didn’t care for either of them, but maybe I should do a reread and see if anything has changed. Too bad about the Penguin edition, that would upset me.

I agree, 1984 is an important read. I co-taught a class to homeschooled high schoolers just before the Pandemic where we read both 1984 and Brave New World. They are both important books. Neither of them leave you with warm, fuzzy feelings. I like dystopians as well and have read all those you mentioned. One that recently came to my attention is We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. He is a Russian author who wrote this in 1921. I am told it influenced both 1984 and Brave New World. I hope to read it soon.

While I enjoyed both Animal Farm and 1984, my favorite George Orwell works are his essays. They are amazing and still relevant. You can find the entire collection in a beautiful Everyman edition. Thanks for a great review.

I have some Penguin clothbounds and when I read from one the design on the outside rubbed off!! I was so sad🙁 I don’t read from them anymore… I read the paperback and let those just look pretty on my shelf🤷🏼‍♀️

Reading 451 now. Wanting to read 1984 now I know that I will skip around in part 2. Thanks for letting me know. I read animal farm in school. I think would like to read brave new world too that sounds good.

I highly recommend watching Brazil! It’s not an easy watch but it’s definitely a classic of the 80’s.

My son read both Animal Farm and 1984 this past school year in his Honors English class. He really enjoyed both of them . He is not a big reader but can be pulled in by a good dystopian.

Odd... I thought I had read it, but I would remember that middle slog. Maybe I should give it a go. 451 was great as was Animal Farm.

I really enjoyed The Nede Rising series by Jess Corban. Interesting dystopian duology.

We are actually going through al little dystopia in our world today. Too much changing meanings to words, too much censoring of speech and trying to control societies and countries. I do not like to dwell on these type of things so I read happy books. I saw the 1984 movie and it scared me and I hated it. But these books are a look at what will happen if we are not careful.

I read Animal Farm in high school and hated it, so I've never read anything else from him.
