I really recommend the Black Mesa documentary by Noclip that released earlier this year and followed the development of this 15+ year long fan project. Even though I have never played Half Life, it was really interesting to see how this initial re-texture project turned into a full on collective effort by many passionate fans to remake the entire game in order to modernize and refresh the experience, and even received Valve’s blessing to do what they wanted.

Played "Black Mesa" last year and have to say, they took Xen to a whole other level. I've been gaming for over 35 years and first arriving at Xen is easily one of the most memorable gaming moments I've ever had. The music, the atmosphere and other-worldly beauty. I sat for about 5 minutes with my jaw on the floor, taking it all in. I literally felt like I was alone on an alien planet. Still get chills thinking about it.

I don't know what they did, but the dialogue in Half Life of all the background characters and the ones that are part of your main story, still is better than any game I've played since. Not just the words they use, but the meshing of two voices having a conversation is very fluid. It's noticeable, compared to pretty much everything out there. When someone or something interrupts the speaker, it sounds like an interruption, instead of a person reading dialogue and pausing intentionally. Then when you see it in game there's a pregnant pause between words and actual interruption.

I wish i could go back and relive my first time playing The original game. I was in complete awe and completely wonder stuck with the whole experience.

This remake is incredible, and the creative direction they took with Xen is absolutely stunning. I love that they made the Gonarch an absolute monster who took a whole chapter to defeat.

I remember, many many moons ago, playing this game with my very first 3D card - an nVidia Riva 128ZX with 8MB VRAM, on a Pentium 90 with a whopping 16MB of EDO SIMM memory installed. With a 6GB HDD, I had space for Win98 AND more than one game installed.

I started in on it on a Friday evening, and I went a solid 32 hours playing it - only paused for bathroom breaks and a run to the convenience store next door for caffeination. It sucked me in like very few other games have in my life...

Half life is the first game that totally blew me away with its story telling at the age of 14....I still think its a masterpiece game of times!

They added in radio chatter for the HECU units over those radio units you find in the field, love that little touch of extra storytelling. Really hammers home how things start spiraling out of control.

The best game remake I've ever seen of a old game. When Freeman goes to Xen, wow, that planet receive a lot of attention to details... the atmosphere, the music, it's like they created everything to show us the fauna and flora of that planet. Super amazing ! I played HL in 2004 for the first time, and that planet confused me a lot, until it started to make sense... I loved the flying species remake ! Thanks for sharing your walkthrough !

Introduction to Xen is a masterpiece. I get same kind of feeling when in Unreal I've stepped out of Vortex Rikers for the first time.
