No way this game used to take me 6 hours to beat, always felt it took ages

This makes me appreciate the original even more... it looks like every other game and lost artistic style i love so much

Ah, nothing that shouts more "REMASTER" than a can of Coca Cola in a dystopian city where anything other than water is off-limits for civilians. Very nice

Edit: Please stop replying the same butthurt comments, it's been 6 months, thanks

Cinematic Mod: A very good example of how NOT to remaster a game, how NOT to deal with criticism, and that talent alone is not enough if you don't respect or understand the art direction of the original!

I remember getting my PC to a friend to download HL2 when it launched via Internet and had to play it in offline mode at home because we didn't have internet back then. For me one of the finest games ever made. The physics were nuts compared to other games.

Okay but I really really dig the eyeglass effect as if the player is actually looking through Gordon's glasses. Pure genius

I so badly want another game like this which was so heavily invested in its world building.

My advice as an artist, is to conduct a remaster via the squint method. Simply put, if you squint while looking between the two; you shouldn't notice any big glaring differences.

A more comprehensive method to check work is just performing a blur pass (like Gaussian blur) periodically on screenshots of your updated version. Because you're trying to match the tones and aesthetics while upping the resolution. So an easy way to see just colors rather than all your gritty details you're adding, is to stop seeing the tiny details and look at the overall composition. To clarify, this isn't me saying you should make a blurry mess as your remaster but more so use that as a tool to check your progress against the original.

Not every plank and panel needs loud & grainy normal maps. The key to a good remaster is knowing what does and doesn't require more details thrown at it. Often times less is more.

Old cinematic mod was BS so glad someone made a remake. Looks Awesome!

Can we just take a moment and realize this game turns 20 years old next year. Time really flies by.

Well that amount of detail is amazing and it looks very good. Congrats to the developers. But... unfortunately it loses its atmosphere, the loneliness and emptiness of the Rout Canal and Highway 17. Still, very well done.

This does look pretty sick, definitely gives off a darker vibe. Some of the original atmosphere is gone (would've preferred way more fog for the coastal levels) but this new atmosphere fits pretty well.

i would love a source 2 reimagining of half-life 2 that acts as a sequel to black mesa. they could call it city 17.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away.

Its modders like this that have kept halflife 2 and other games alive well past thier release dates. I made maps for HL1 and HL2 back in the day, great times. Respect for the modders out there that still have the passion to make content.
