A heatwave is hitting hard across southern Europe. Temperatures are expected to surpass 40C in parts of Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Turkey.

In Rome, temperatures could reach as high as 43C, and a possible 47C on the island of Sardinia. In the Greek capital Athens, maximum temperatures could reach 45 degrees on Saturday. Sweltering heat has made life harder for people. Authorities are urging residents and tourists to be cautious. Extreme temperatures are likely to continue into the weekend.

Scientists say droughts, heat, wildfires, and other dangerous weather events are becoming more likely and severe due to climate change in most places worldwide. Extreme rainfall has become more frequent and intense because of man-made global warming – this is true for most places in the world, especially Europe, large parts of Asia, central and eastern North America, and parts of South America, Africa and Australia. However, it is not responsible for all weather disasters.

For more on this, we speak to Sjoukje Philip, a climate scientist at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. We ask her: When can we blame extreme weather events on climate change?

There is a point at which humans cannot just "get used" to the heat

Love how it’s “we have to get used to this somehow” instead of “we have to finally make meaningful changes to our industrial lifestyles.”

This is the coolest summer of the rest of our lives.

Your future agriculture, forests and other habitats look very different if you're used to 35C as an extreme, but now it's normal and 45 is the new extreme. All you need is a few dry summers and you are left with desert. If you then experience heavy rainfall, then all you get is floods and topsoil erosion. Losing forests and other water holding habitats, like wetlands, is no joke. They are of incalculable value.

Reminder, do NOT get used to this. If we choose to live in the present and individually try to do our best we can all together achieve atleast a better outcome rather than with the attitude "just get used to it". Of course it is sad, but we can do it together for our only planet Earth. Do not take it for granted. 🌏💚

"When can we start to blame climate change?" - what an idiotic question - this doesnt just start one day it has been going on for decades and we shouldnt blame climate change we should blame ourselves.

"we just have to get used to it" - this year it's 40°C, next year it's 41°C and so on. We can't adjust to hostile conditions

The problem is that climate warming is no longer linear, this year temperatures are breaking records at extreme levels.

"we just have to get used to this"
While the rich oil billionaires are benefitting from pumping oil we are suffering. Horrible

It gets to 45c here in California, and people die from heat exhaustion. Very dangerous

At what point do we reframe from being civil towards government and companies that are either doing nothing or doing very little at a slow pace to get to zero emissions.

This is just a small foretaste of the future. In 2050 we'll look back at the 2020ies and dream of the cooler weather we had back than.

If not for air conditioning, Spain wouldn't be habitable at this point.

Oh no, if only someone would have warned us. And if only politicians would have heard it and motivated the problems

Not get used to it! What did we do when HFCs were destroying the ozone? We need to hold responsible the causes and causers and act on this. This is insane these reactions.

"Get used to the rising heat", like the frog in increasingly heated up water...lol
