John F. Kennedy's sister, Rosemary Kennedy, was ultimately found to have an IQ of only 60-70, something the family went to elaborate lengths to hide. Finally, at the age of 23 as she began to become "rebellious," with Joseph Kennedy Sr. worrying she might embarrass the family, Kennedy Sr. learned of a relatively new medical procedure that would supposedly calm his daughter. That medical procedure was a lobotomy. As one of the surgeons said, "We went through the top of the head... She had a mild tranquilizer. I made a surgical incision in the brain through the skull. It was near the front. It was on both sides. We just made a small incision..." At which point they began making blunt cuts of her brain with a butter-knife like object. They finally stopped destroying her brain when she became incoherent and no longer could respond to questions they asked her. From that point on, her mental capacity dropped to that of a 1-2 year old and she only regained the ability to walk much later in life, though with a limp. She never regained the ability to speak coherently and was also incontinent from that point on. She lived another 63 years, dying at the age of 86 in 2005.

Poor Rosemary. If she were born under different circumstances she would have had a great life. But then again, on the other side, she could’ve had it far worse. Being German instead of American in that time for example.

Also the only reason she had a low IQ in the first place was because when she was being born the nurses told the mother to hold her legs together because the doctor hadn't arrived yet, this caused her to be deprived of oxygen which caused brain damage.

Whenever people say that nurses deserve higher pay I think of the fact that nurses caused Rosemary Kennedy to get brain damage.

I could go on forever listing stories I read on reddit about terrible nurses, such as nurses stealing pain meds from patients but documenting in the patient's chart that they were given the medicine.

There was one really tragic story of a person who had just had major surgery making him temporarily unable to speak during the recovery, and he had to endure a lot of it without pain meds because they have nursed with stealing them and he had no way to communicate that he wasn't getting them.

Thankfully his doctor ordered blood work and noticed the medication wasn't in his system and with able to get him on the medication, however nurses stealing medication is a major issue in this country add oftentimes the nurses just fired and get hired at a different hospital, just like what the Catholic Church does with pedophiles

Joe Kennedy, Sr. was punished for all his transgressions by being having a stroke and watching helplessly from a wheelchair as his remaining sons Robert and Edward had theirvown tragedies in the '60's, Bobby being assassinated, Teddy at Chappaquiddick.
