Locking the back. It's a feeling I have never been able to describe until u put it into words

Because your body mass travels with the hook it’s stiffer and harder (pause) it’s about how you shift your weight to do it. The long pretty hook loses power because it’s further from your center of gravity or body mass, the second one is closer and brings you closer but packs a bigger punch. First hook is more of a feeler look or something pretty, second one has bad intentions

Thank you. There are people that are better off, structurally, throwing a non traditional hook. It doesn't have to be perfect traditional technique. Effectiveness for the individual is the main focus. There are people who do better being non traditional. Cory you could make a great striking coach after your UFC career, and potential championship run.

Topuria did that to Volkanovski. Huge side step to the right then sprung that hook from his lats. Crazy powerful

We were just working on this tonight. You can tell instantly when you are doing it right and when people are still doing it wrong.

It can be confusing but he’s saying throw your whole back into it committing fully but for this you need to generate it starting with feet to hips and up. Never throw shoulder punches amateurs generate their punches from arms and shoulders but a man of technique generates power from hips like a torque, that person is always going to win in street fight. Put your power and torque into a powerful hook by having the right footing, pivoting like a hinge starting with feet and transfer it through your hips and locking entire upper body. If you don’t have the right position of the legs and hips, you won’t be able to efficiently knockout someone with a hook. Force, speed and snap is key using good technique. Practice footing and even if you feel off balance, don’t worry it takes time.

I also like to step to the right leading with my back leg. Gets my hook there faster and stronger

Can someone explain what he means as locking the back? Like do we have to tighten the core area and maintain that stiffness while throw punch?

This one of the few dudes who really understands fighting and angles and all that approach

If you ever learn to use your legs you might actually hurt someone. My Muay Thai coach hated when I did it but pivot on your lead foot like a boxer and generate the power up through your legs rotating through your torso transferring the energy to your fist. Use your entire body not your arm.

Asides locking the back you can see he also moves his back leg which helps with that power release

For me I call this the "crunch down" or engaging the spine angle. Game changer. Also for helping to tuck the chin better and more easily and break the core from body shot impact etc. Corey is next level

It's also in the pivot movement on the front foot

if you want a good hook widen stance slide the lead foot out and turn

There is no “locking” of the back. What there is… is connection from the floor to the fist at impact with the hips being the ‘engine’ of power generation, particularly with this hook.

Yep, arm punch vs structurally sound technique with bone support…as good of a fighter as he is, he’s also a really good teacher…the way he breaks down the fundamentals of technique. I’ve always appreciated his artistry, but didn’t really become a fan until I saw him on that Rogan interview and got to see more of who he is as a person and his cognitive process.

Load the weight onto the lead leg, drive the foot (don’t pivot the foot), push through the hip, brace your back and core, and (you should have your hand loose not relaxed) right before impact flex the whole arm/body

To generate power we must turn at the waist not turn the waist☯️
