Professor Geoffrey Hinton says he's 'very worried' about AI taking jobs and has advised the British government to adopt a universal basic income
to deal with the impact of AI on inequality.

Speaking with BBC Newsnight, Hinton expresses deep concern about AI displacing numerous mundane jobs, leading to increased inequality. He argues that while AI has the potential to boost productivity and generate wealth, the benefits will primarily accrue to the wealthy, leaving many workers behind. Hinton believes UBI could help mitigate this disparity by providing a fixed income to all citizens, ensuring that the gains from AI advancements are more evenly distributed across society.

“I was consulted by people in Downing Street and I advised them that universal basic income was a good idea,” Hinton says, highlighting the importance of reforming the benefits system.

He is right. When wealth continues its current trajectory of greater and greater concentration in the hands of the few, then there will be a tipping point with mass unemployment, the rise of extreme right wing populists blaming everyone but the rich and therefore enormous societal instability in Western /Global Northern countries. I see no one at a political level with the understanding, leadership and vision to even start to think about this.

It's hardly just so-called "mundane jobs" that will be taken. It is going to get very ugly over the next few years and beyond.

Automation already caused world wide drop in birth rates imo. If something is not done about it the drop will increase .

Worker co-ops in particular and strong unions are needed more than ever now, democratization of the workplace. Though I’m very pro UBI it’s still not the end all be all.
