Mikhail Pletnev's performance of this concerto in 1991 has something I can't describe that stands out from all the other versions I've listened to, I can also enjoy other versions, but I always come back to this one.

33-year-old Mikhail Pletnev plays Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in b flat minor, Opus. 23, with Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev.

00:00 First Movement
21:04 Second Movement
28:04 Third Movement

I have to admit that this is probably the pinnacle of recordings of this concerto, the Steinway sound is divine and the orchestra and pianist are in perfect balance.. this is music from heaven

This man possesses the type of smooth transition that most people will never master in a million years. It shows not only work ethics and discipline but also natural gifts. He has a sense of rhythm that makes one want to get up and live. What a gifted soul. This is a bright star! :)

This is the greatest, most imaginative performance of this I ever heard; it's as if I'm hearing it for the first time! I don't want to know those 17 unmusical slobs who voted this thumbs down; their spirits must be as "dark as Erebus."

One of the best composer of the 18th century. Russia's pride . Such a magnificent piece of music. 1819, swan lake, sleeping beauty, the Nutcracker suite.
Just imagine seeing Russia right now, majestic, proud and dignified country. Love Russia.

I'm so glad that I lived after Tchaikovsky and Pletnev, and not before.

Mikhail Pletnev - is not just a brilliant pianist, he has amazing self-control - when a string suddenly broke during a performance at the Tchaikovsky competition, Mikhail Pletnev played everything flawlessly without batting an eye. . .

Best videos on YouTube are generally the videos with the least views, which is quite obvious as the true art can't be understood by most

Absolutely marvelous, perfect, heart-moving performance. I got chills watching, listening Mr.Pletnev playing piano and the out=of-this-world orchestra. Lucky the people who attended: this is once in a lifetime experience

A performance of real individuality and style. The numerous 'interpretive touches' are fascinating in their spontaneity and the main cadenza of the first movement is like an improvisation. Pletnev's technique is effortless and gives him the ability to respond to the inspiration of the moment. Tchaikovsky's great work sounds fresh and new. Other performances that shed new light on this very popular concerto and lift the music off the page are 'live' accounts by Cherkassky, Horowitz, Cziffra and Lang Lang.
