Seljuks: we will do a mongol
People: what are mongols?
Seljuks: wait a few years.

Roman resilience is a real thing. Whilst the Seljuks didn't break the Byzantine Empire, they did cripple it tremendously. Same for the Rashidun Caliphate and Fourth Crusade, but the Ottomans finished the job.

As a Turk and a history lover, I believe that Manzikert wasn't a breaking point for the Byzantine Empire. Because the Byzantines were able to push the Seljuks back after they had to leave the Asian minor post Manzikert.
I consider Battle of Myriokephalon in 1176 as a breaking point while the sack of Constantinople was where the tide was turned.

It is so interesting to study the history in depth at this period. It was much much more complex than Turk vs Roman or Muslim vs Christian.
Lots of alliances and back stabbing. Game of thrones middle east edition.

Manzikert was the prelude for 1453. Myriokefalon, a century later, put the last nail in the coffin. Then it came 1204, and essentially, all was over.

There was a civil war that toppled Romanos Diogenes and left Byzantium in anarchy. Afterwards the Komnenian Dynasty managed to retake most of Anatolia, especially the exterior, but were followed by the incapable Angelos Dynasty, which basically caused the 4th Crusade. Before that, Byzantium was on its way to retake Anatolia

Byzantines were the 19-20th century Ottoman empire, where one diplomat described the situation as "you foreigners are trying hard to break our empire externally, where we trying hard to break ourselves internally, but this empire still is not dying yet.

I don't understand how a single defeat lead to the whole region of Anatolia lost! Weren't the cities there walled at all?

The Empire was somewhat able to recover from Manzikert. What crippled the Byzantines though was the 4th Crusade. There was no recovery after that, only spiraling decay and final defeat.

Byzantines could have rented the land to warlords in exchange of military support. At the time, the major threat was considered the Normans and the Anatolian rebels. We discuss about Manzikert with the luxury of hindsight.

It was definitely the first domino to fall. The next was the civil wars that happened basically immediately afterwards

What ensure Roman Empire to never reclaim Anatolia is Manuel Konmnenos evacuating the interior Anatolia and move the Greeks there to settle Coastal Anatolia, which give wah for the Turks to settle.

It was the ensuing civil war that broke the Eastern roman empire
