First time I see brewing this way with an Italian coffeemaker (we call it like this in Spain). We usually just put the coffee and water in their respective chambers, assemble it all together in cold and to the fire it goes. The rest of the process is as you portray it.
Maybe you got better results than the traditional way in Spain, but I am not willing to take the chance!
Cozy kitchen and great video by the way! You explain things great.

Omg my kitchen looks a lot like yours! I have the wood walls, a tiny gas stove with a shelf over top, & next to the same vintage iron sink just like that! How cool! Plus i just made my iced latte using my Moka pot 😝 Just watching videos cuz I've only had a Moka pot a few months and Im learning more about it so happy to have one!

The wait is totally worth it. I've been doing the traditional method and personally thought it was tasted watered down, relative to the water/ grounds ratio. But the 'low heat' made the batch 10x better: stronger for every note

Interesting that you heat the water before installing the top. I just assemble everything and place atop the burner. Do you think it makes a difference?

I grew up calling this a Cuban coffee maker using Cuban coffee in it. Every one in my family has one. ❤

I use James Hoffmann's way which I found it totally changed the way I make Moka pot coffee.

I have been using my Moka pot for years now and this is the first time I've watched a tutorial on how to use it. Haha

The thing is, I've actually been using something similar to your second technique. I don't use a scale but I've found two scoops (from my kid's milk) works for me and upon weighing, turns out it's 14g.
What I didn't realize though is that I've been drinking 3 servings of coffee very time I make my moka!

Hello, nice tutorial! I use both methods, and if there is anybody that is open to experimentation, I'd like to suggest one more that I like to use when I make coffee with the moka pot at home.

Before to start, a couple suggestions: you can fill the chamber with cold water and heat it on the stove as described for the first method, or you can heat it on a kettle and put the hot water in the chamber before to assebly the moka pot. Or, you can use cold water as explained in the video for the second method. I'd recommend to use coffee beans specific for moka and not for espresso. Or you can experiment, according to personal taste. Important: don't grind excessively fine, and don't press the coffee! As specified on the video, the moka pot doesn't produce enough pressure, the water could find difficult to pass through the ground coffee, resulting in bad extraction, or causing the bottom chamber tp explode!

The "wet bed" method - Proceed as usual, fill the chamber with water, just below the valve, heat the water (as in the first method) or use cold water (as in the second).
Prepare the coffee grounds. Put a small amount (like 1/4) of coffee grounds in the grounds chamber, and put some water over the grounds to wet them (the water should spill from outside the bottom of the grounds chamber and must be discarded).Give the grounds a stir, Then, add the remaining amount of coffee over the wet one. Finish the assemblage - put the grounds chamber inside the bottom chamber and add the top one. Proceed as the other methods to finish.
Since the temperature influences the extraction, and the moka pot extracts the coffee at a much higher temperature than a filter coffee, the "wet bed" of coffee helps to keep te temperature lower and ensure a better extraction, and a better tasting coffee.

One more thing than I can suggest: try adding a paper filter (like the ones used for the chemex) cut to size, over the filter that's on the bottom of the upper chamber. The flavor will be improved. And try mixing all these tips, every slight change will affect the result.

Enjoy!

This was great - a lot less "fussy" than I've seen in other Moka pot tutorials. Thanks!

I've tried Moka pot, pour-over v60, coffee machine, and k cup coffee I like pour-over coffee using my v60 the best. Pour-over coffee seems to me like it has a smoother flavor and it just tastes like a MORE nice naturally clean cup of coffee.

you were almost correct. You don't want to grind the coffee too fine though and most certainly not as fine as possible, if you want to avoid bitter taste.

Great video. I have the Capresso Infinity grinder. Do you have any idea what line setting I would use for the moka pot? I guess I can play around with different grinds. Thank you

@homeGroundsCoffee Great video! Since I also have the Encore Baratza burr grinder, what numeric setting do you find works best for most coffees using method 2?
