Amazing pixel artists seen in my game dev and devlog videos:

Check out my previous devlogs:

Its been about 300 days since I started learning game development and game design. I started back in September 2021 after watching a bunch of game dev YouTube videos and getting inspired. I did know how to code which was definitely a benefit but I was completely new to Unity and game development and design.

That very first project I started in Unity is still the same project I’ve been working in. I didn’t create any smaller test games or anything, which was probably not the best idea looking back.

But tutorial after tutorial and 7 devlogs later, I found myself slowly getting more confident. Though I still definitely look up tutorials and guides all the time!

Now 300 days of game development sounds like a lot, and I’m sure a more experienced game developer could pump out some really amazing games in a fraction of that time. But to me this has been not only a project I want to release but also an immense learning experience. From not knowing anything about the Unity editor, to implementing advanced NPC behavior systems.

And I wish I could work on my indie game for more time but I work full time, and regularly make videos for this channel, as well as all the random things that come up in regular life

That brings me to this YouTube channel and my devlogs. The purpose of my devlogs are not only to show recent development of my game Muster, but also to document the ongoing learning process. I love getting suggestions in the comments of ways to improve or systems to redesign, because although it might sound like I know what I’m talking about, I really don’t.

This video isn’t meant to go into a lot of depth regarding the specifics of my indie game, but rather give a holistic perspective from my game dev journey, but more specifically, my game development learning journey.

And that’s why I love this animation, it shows that with each commit the game gets a little better and I learn a little more. When we zoom out you can see what a long journey its been, but incredibly fun.

I’m working on other devlogs and indie game dev retrospective videos, as well as some personal videos, but I hope you enjoyed this quick portrayal and illustration of over 300 days of learning game development!

Comment down below what you thought of the video!

I've been in IT for 1 year and 3months.
Back there I was crazy about game dev. But getting far with learning, I got lost.
Tried a lot of technologies and because I was scared of not being able to get hired I got into JavaScript.. I don't have much knowledge here, but React will be my main thing.
My heart is still in GameDev, but it is very small amout of money in it and for living you need this ' money ' ..
Good luck to everyone reading my journey !

Very inspiring for my own journey of learning unity. So far I've been working on my own first project for 125 days.

I love the idea of this, it's a great way to see your progress when you usually don't see it ;)

It definitely helps that you knew how to program before going into this. I just started and don't know any programming, but I understand games and design. Just feeling pretty lost and helpless when it comes to the programming aspect

Hello! I have been tremendously enjoying your devblog videos. I can’t wait to see the next!

I do have a question. How are you creating your buildings within your world? I just started creating my own top down game with tilemaps and have encountered numerous issues creating buildings with tilemaps. I noticed that in the beginning of this video you are making buildings with the tiles that looks like a different program. Are you having better success utilizing that method of creating your world?

Very nice, I've got about 1300 hours on my project, I'm almost done with 1/3rd of the core systems but I'm hitting some... complex issues. That and my Unity gives me D3D errors every 2 seconds or 10 minutes.

Regardless I'm powering through it, I just wish I knew why I kept getting D3D errors even if nothing is running.

I feel like we as a society do tutorials a disservice by calling them that. it is fucked up that we call what is, in a whole lotta ways, the courner stone of education in the fields rapidly changin the world... the same thing we call the level in kids games that teaches you the controls.
