Ketosis Science: Do Exogenous Ketones Work? Thomas DeLauer….
Exogenous ketone bodies are just ketone bodies that are ingested through a nutritional supplement (think of ketone bodies produced in the liver as endogenous ketone bodies)
Most supplements use bHB as the source of their ketone bodies. BHB is converted to acetoacetic acid and then some quantity converted to acetone through a acetoacetate decarboxylase waste pathway, the acetone will be excreted. Some of the acetoacetic acid will enter the energy pathway using beta-ketothiolase, which converts acetoacetic acid to two Acetyl-CoA molecules. The Acetyl-CoA is then able to enter the Krebs cycle and generate ATP. Exogenous ketone body supplements provide users with an instant supply of ketones.
Exogenous ketone body supplements provide users with an instant supply of ketones and will raise blood ketones even if you’re not in a state of ketosis before ingestion.
Note: Research is in its early stages and more data is needed to understand the long-term effects of combining high blood ketone levels with high or moderate carbohydrate based diets.

Benefits/When to Use: Overview-
Exogenous ketone supplementation causes blood glucose to decrease significantly, likely due to the acute increase in insulin sensitivity. Also improve oxygen utilization, especially in the central nervous system (CNS) - This effect decreases the likelihood of oxygen reaching potentially toxic levels in the CNS.
Ketone bodies are considered neuroprotective as they reduce the inflammation and hyperexcitability that is normally exhibited as glucose metabolism declines in the brain.
Anti-Inflammatory properties: There is evidence that ketone bodies play a crucial role in reducing inflammation by inhibiting a specific class of proteins called inflammasomes.

Weight Loss/Fat Burning:
Note: Exogenous ketones don’t cause weight loss, but rather help promote a ketogenic state. Taking exogenous ketones will let your body know that it is time to use ketones - When you’re done using the exogenous ketones as fuel, your body will start asking for other places to get ketones from - this would be fat.
*Ketones are believed to regulate appetite by altering levels of the hunger hormones cholecystokinin and ghrelin - also affect the hypothalamus region in the brain and positively impact leptin signals*
One study in rats showed that, under conditions of ketosis, glucose consumption is decreased in the cortex and cerebellum by about 10% per each mM of plasma ketone bodies - body will choose to run on ketones over glucose.

Exercise/Athletic Performance:
When you run out of glycogen, your body can either make more, or start making energy from fat. Both of these processes are dependent on using oxygen for energy. However, when you take exogenous ketones, your body can use that energy immediately with much lower oxygen utilization - Exogenous ketones require less oxygen per mole of carbon to oxidize. Exogenous ketones present a way to elevate ketone levels without having depleted muscle glycogen stores (low muscle glycogen is well known to impair sustained physical performance)

Cognitive Function:
In one study, from the journal of Neurology of Aging, 20 subjects with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairments were asked to consume a drink that helped elevate ketone levels in their body.
Found that those with higher ketone levels experienced greater improvements in paragraph recall versus those with lower ketone levels.

I needed this breakdown! Thank you for explaining all of this. I've been using exogenous ketones before my workout in the morning but I have fat to lose. I've been worried it was hindering my body's own natural ability to burn my fat. But I've been in ketosis for a while. However I've plateaued. Wondering if I stop using them completely if it would help my body burn it's own fat better....you are saying though if I'm already in ketosis it helps with composition yes?

Thank you for the explanation. I have felt like there are so many people trying to shove Pruvit down my throat.

Thomas you need to hook up with Dr. Dominic D’Agastino. He the foremost expert on Exogenous Ketones as a scientist having done studies and put programs together for Navy Seals, NASA and kids with seizures. He literally wrote the book on the science of exogenous ketones. By the way I watch your videos several times a day. You are my go to guy for Keto. I’ve lost 19 lbs over 7 weeks, feel great and my autoimmune disease is under control, arthritis is gone, headaches are gone and I’m healthier than I e ever been in my 43 years. I’m documenting my journey on YouTube and appreciate all the science based content you are providing and regurgitating it just as fast to those who ask. Please know you’ve made a huge impact on my life and I appreciate it.

I work in west Texas and the heat makes me sweat beyond reason. I’ve struggled every summer for years. My body hasn’t been able to keep up with electrolytes and hydration in the hottest months.
I’m now using exogenous ketone salts to help recover from excessive heat exertion.
These ketone salts are extremely efficient for electrolyte recovery.

I get into Keto just fine and really don’t need exogenous ketones to stay in ketosis.

I use the ketone salts like no carb super Gatorade. Works great and I’m much mor resilient in the heat.

Keto cyclist. A benefit I experience when using exogenous ketones on my endurance rides is how it keeps my blood glucose low. Keeping it low keeps me burning clean, marvelous ketones. Grateful you cite studies. I think I'll drink some exogenous ketones and plow through them. I'm wanting to work on timing. You note how your body goes searching for them once you've burned through the exo ketones and that stimulates production. I want to figure out how to leverage this for my performance. Especially since, separately, I've also benefited from Generation Ucan Superstartch. It also keeps my blood glucose low during a long bike ride allowing me to run only on body fat. Seriously! two centuries, 0 in race calories.

I love how he breaks science down .. so easier to understand ... now I’m going to see what Eric Berg opinion is about this .. 😕

Should I be taking ketones and Mct oil at the same time?

I think you missed something here, Thomas.
At 3:11, you said that exogenous ketones will take precedence over your body's natural endogenous production. However, ketosis only occurs if your body is deficient in the glucose supply. Anyone who eats ANY TYPE of carbohydrates is eating glucose because that's what it becomes when it reaches the bloodstream.

With that being said, for you to reach ketosis' "natural endogenous production" you need to cut out carbohydrates and sugars. My point is that exogenous ketones won't take priority if there aren't any endogenous.

what if your on a zero carb meat only keto diet and are already in ketosis, will they give energy for both types of workouts?

Great video Thomas!! Lots of great information in this one!

My request for a video is one on Keto and Histamine Intolerance. It get's a bit tricky for us histamine peeps out there because we have to eat foods low in Histadine. Avoiding things like vinegar, sauerkraut, sardines, cheese, avocados, cured meats, and on and on. Any advice for us? Maybe part of that video could be how a ketogenic diet affects mast cell stabilization? Thanks for considering this one!!

Thank You Thomas! I am training for a 30 mile, bike race in November here in Michigan, called the Iceman. It has lots of steep hills, is right through the woods, and a endurance race for sure. In this year I have started living a low carb lifestyle, employing IF most days, and 24-72 hour fast at least 1x a month. I was a sugar addict for 28 years. I’ve lost a ton of weight, feel 1000X better and love the results. Finally something that is long term. Your videos have helped me so much. I really appreciate this video. My question is: would it be better to be in strict ketosis or what I’m doing now, and take exogenous keystone supplements on race day? What about eating a few carbs with the keystones for the Big hills? I hope you are catching what I’m pitching. I’m open to any suggestions. Thank You

Mr. DeLauer has gained a great deal of my confidence by showing an understanding of physiology and supporting his points by quoting scientific studies. I would suggest a video format amendment. Maybe every time he uses the words ”studies have shown, ” I’d appreciate a simultaneous caption below on the screen quoting said study, (studies, ) so I can corroborate for myself weather I agree with his interpretation of the study results.

I’m definitely not trying to lose fat and after about 4-6 weeks of keto I’m just now introducing some exogenous ketones. I’m hoping I can help my body fat adapt. Then I plan on getting back on a IF plan. It’s all a journey! But with the goal of a lifestyle change and not just a diet, that’s fine with me. I couldn’t do it without content like yours! Thanks Thomas!🤘🏼 Hope all is well!😃

Thank you for the exogenous ketones breakdown, I have never been interested in exogenous ketones, but after watching this, I would consider them for exercise... not right now though. I started keto on 01/15/18 and this month I have been getting stronger with my lifts. So, maybe when I hit a plateau I'll give them a try??

Thank you for info. I workout every morning at 5:30am in fasted state. I have been taking exogenous ketones 30 minutes prior to my workout. I have struggled getting into ketosis due to not having a gallbladder. Should I try to wean myself off the ketones or continue for more effective workout. As you noted, I do T25 GAmma which combines aerobic and anaerobic activities. I feel good during my workout but worried I am only burning off the exogenous ketones. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Totally obsessed with your videos.
