Hey Andy! Have you watched much Cure Dolly? Her videos on passive sentences address the gripes you have with how they're taught. She asserts that 受身形 (or 受動態) both imply some form of acceptance, and labelling them as passive is our way of inappropriately forcing English concepts onto Japanese. if you think of it as a "receptive" form: AはBにV, A receives the verb V from B, then the weirdness makes sense. I received the action of being peed on by the dog, I received the action of being called by my friend, the water received the action of being drunk, etc. Sorry if it's inappropriate to mention another channel here but I think it might be a good way for you to teach it in the future if you think it's appropriate.

Passive really does seem a bit tricky lol but I appreciate you clearing up the misconceptions Genki causes. I actually encountered some passive sentences in the manga I've been reading the other day, and didn't understand them until now haha

The Japanese passive form is very entertaining for native speakers of Slavic languages who do not know the passive form because none of these languages use it in their grammar.

Is it only me or when Andy says 電話、it sounds like “denma”.
Even when I slow down to 0.25x speed, I still hear denma instead of denwa

Can't you just translate the passive as "got". 友達に電話された = I got called by my friend. or 俺のお菓子を見つけられました = My snacks got found. It seems like it works for pretty much every example.
