A bit different in the Navy. There, it's appropriately "sink or swim". As a new Ensign flying the RF-8, I led sorties with experienced F-4 crews just because the mission was reconnaissance. Even in the F-14, things were a bit more "informal". Of course, that was many years ago, so maybe that's changed.

I have a combat question whenever a target is disseminated to a squadron or crew are the pilots responsible for the planning/Execution of said target or is everything out of the pilots hands

I'm heavily considering joining Air Force Reserves because the idea of being around the F-35 and other planes as a job sounds really appealing to me whilst still being able to have more of a personal life compared to active duty service like what my father did.
