Thanks! I bought a 2014 Durango with 19K miles for my grandson, changed the oil and mucked it up. I was about to get the metal aftermarket part when I saw this video. I had never changed an above engine filter and placed the o ring incorrectly. Problem solved, truly appreciated young man! THANKS AGAIN!

Almost replaced the oil filter mount due to this problem. Thank God I came across this video. I had the o-ring in the wrong place and now with your information shared it is correctly placed and oil leak is gone. THANK YOU!!!

Thanks for posting. 35 years in the game and still learning. I missed the alignment of the ring and it caused a leak. Had this car for ten years.
Never happened before. Saved a big headache. Almost took it to a shop.

Hey Dave, Here was my situation. Just bought a 2012 3.6. Went to change the oil and filter. Couldnt get the correct filter. Went to 3 different parts stores. All the filters were wrong. Finally called the previous owner only to find they had the filter housing that leaks was replaced and the dealer put in a newer model part! I looked up the part for 2014 model and sure enough the filter was correct. I dont know if this happened to other owners but i just wanted to point this out! Thanks

Takes away all the doubt about where the o-ring actually goes! Thumbs up!!

Thank You, you are the only one who has pointed out this common mistake. I never have a problem when I do the oil change myself. It is only when I take it to the dealer. Then they wind up changing out the whole oil cooler.

Wish I saw this before I changed the oil filter / O ring . Would’ve saved headaches, stress and a near catastrophic engine oil pressure situation . Thank you for the great information . I almost gave up . !!!! Changed the location of the O ring on the oil filter cap to where you described . Problem solved . Love my truck again .

Dave, not long ago my wife took her 2018 Journey (3.6L) to a local repair shop for an oil change. She came right home afterwards. It's about a mile or two away. She then went out to go to the grocery store <1 mile. I happened to go outside and there was a thick streak of oil going from the drive way and up the street. I immediately called her to come right home when she was done. When I lifted the hood and removed the engine cover (FYI I'm a former USAF aircraft mechanic 😁), I found oil all over the top of the engine. Since their was a lot of oil on the filter housing, I right away went to a parts store and bought a filter to have as a just in case replacement.

I removed the filter and inspected the seal and found a nick in it. I thought that it was odd that much oil would come from that nick. At that time I didn't notice where I removed the o-ring from. However, I replaced the (new) filter and o-ring and spent more time than that to start trying to clean up the oil spillage. Since I usually do my own oil changes I knew where the o-ring went. After that it didn't leak anymore. I think I had to replace 3 quarts of oil, half the capacity.

Your video gives a better explanation of what probibly happened. The shop I took it to, a place I've gone to for years, was under new ownership and they were using the shop to service cars for their network of used car dealerships. The place was slammed. In a hurry the mechanic probably put the o-ring in the wrong location and oil was puking out the cap. Unfortunately, they lost a long time customer with that. If I hadn't caught it as soon as I did it could have been really bad. It was months before the streak of oil (which could be followed 2/3 of the way to the shop) went away. A daily reminder.

Needless to say I do my own oil changes now. 😁
I'm now a subscriber. 😁

Thank you for this information!! No joke this was so helpful.
I just did the Dorman all aluminum oil filter housing swap and everything went great until I did a 10 mile drive test. Yes I did do an idle test and all looked good. Then after the drive, oil everywhere! Oil spitting out of the new cap into engine where I just cleaned! What a mess! Glad I found this video. Life saver. 👊🏼

Thank you! I was googling this very thing because it wasn’t clear if the o-ring went to the very bottom or not. Much appreciated for taking the time to make this video.

Excellent job on letting people know about the oil filter issues that these vehicles have. I can see how easy it would be to put the o-ring in the wrong spot on the 2013 to the present filter housing, but it takes a good true mechanic to know that and pay attention to a little detail like that. It goes to show you that not just anyone can change oil in these newer vehicles. My step son and his wife are dealing with this issue right now, they had an oil change done on their 2019 Dodge Caravan and it has been leaking oil ever since they had it done. They took it to a place that does oil changes, transmission fluid, filter flushes and changes and they also detail vehicles any way you want, and so on. I won’t mention the name of the company but they are a nationwide franchise like any fast food restaurant. I sent them this video that you made so they would have the information in their back pocket so they can get the service they deserve.

Just caught this video before replacing the filter housing o ring on my Kia Sedona. Saved my day as this immediately fixed the oil leak. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. The first time I changed the oil, I didn't pay attention when taking the old one off. I was looking for this video but it didn't exist. Lucky for me common sense prevailed.
Also, don't overtighten the cap, you can crack the housing. When I hear the oring make a little squeak, I know I'm done.

I'm basically my shops Chrysler guy now. And it started by me buying an 07 pt cruiser and using your videos to do my water pump and timing belt.
Currently buying a 01 dream cruiser with 30k miles. Runs perfectly. And under 1k price!

Thanks! I had searched for some videos to get an idea of what problems came up during ram 1500 oil change. None where the exact engine/year I had, so I did mine with no problems. Then I walked in the door from finishing and YOUR video just happened to be in the 'next' matrix of videos on my screen...so I selected it: OH FUDGE!!! I did place the oring at the highest groove, didn't pay attention when I took off the previous. I fixed it now before I got into any leak issues.

exactly this happened to me! (o-ring was put all the way down on my 2016 model). You are absolutely correct that it's very misleading on those housings...the last groove (1 too far down) is inviting to put the o-ring right there, which will cause a leak. Chrysler should have designed it like the older model, where the bottom area of the housing is solid and thus preventing the o-ring to be put all the way down and thus in the wrong

Thank you very much! The oil leak happened a couple of days after my oil change. I knew it had to be something I did wrong.
