The Loc-Nar crashes into a volcano on a peaceful world. Green lava covers everyone and turns them into an evil army of mutants.

Based on the fantastical illustrated magazine HEAVY METAL, producer IVAN REITMAN enlists the help of some of Hollywood's animation masters to create the otherworldly tale of a glowing green orb from outer space that spreads destruction throughout the galaxy. Only when encountered by its one true enemy, to whom it is inexplicably drawn, will goodness prevail throughout the universe. Richly and lavishly drawn, the vignettes of the orb's dark victories include the character voices of John Candy, Harold Ramis and a pounding soundtrack by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust. Highly imaginative and full of surprising special effects, HEAVY METAL set the standard for the alternative contemporary animation. An intoxicating experience not to be missed!

Loc-Nar: I will create an army worthy of my reputation, an army of mutants where you shall take charge.
Guy in red coat and mechanical hand: What do I get out of this?
Loc-Nar: You get a cool hat.
Guy: You son of a bitch, I'm in.

That was an impressive mutation: one that gave him a hat to wear when he didn’t have one before.

Love the song in the back ground, "If you listen to fools, the mob rules."

I love the attention to detail at 0:37, the leader clutches a pendant out of fear.

Always wondered how he just magically appeared with a helmet after he came out of that green stuff.

Let's observe a moment of silence for all who have perished in guacamole eruptions.

Always felt bad for these guys. Innocent people in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they get turned into murderous monsters.

Taarna, Den, and B-17 are my favorite segments from Heavy Metal.

I love this. It's what got me into Black Sabbath back in the 80's. I even have the Mob Rules album cover tattooed on my forearm 🤘

1:00 I think the bad ending in Fallout 1 referenced this.

Those who will not fight evil will become victims of it...

I like how parts of this movie run with the awful 80s trope of laser guns, originally necessitated by heavy broadcasting censorship of depicting firearms, which is rendered completely unnecessary by having as much blood in gore in it as pretty much anything else.

I really like the music they play in this scene

That damn sphere has the power to turn anything into a problem or evil. I'm glad the woman destroyed it in the end.

Heavy Metal and Dragon's Heaven are two movies that excite me with visuals the most. As an artist who works mostly with ink, I love to see all this hatching shading that makes every frame too look like a drawing you could put on your wall.

I think I was at, or around, 13 when I saw this movie for the first time and it made an impression for sure. I've seen it, maybe half a dozen times in the 25ish years since then and it's still just a damned good movie. Everything about it is just good. Ya know? No one has really been able to recapture the feeling of this movie and some of the Bakshi films that happened before this one. Spine Of Night tried but it was absolutely terrible.
