I've been to the Hawaii Volcano park many times while visiting in laws from 1991-1995. I've been to the newest black sand and could see the lava flow into the sea. What a view it was but also beautiful at night.

4:46 - Correction. The lava flow did NOT "inch its way towards" the Leilani Estates subdivision; this eruption actually occurred through cracks that appeared IN the subdivision. So lava came up out of the ground among houses and gardens and roads, and of course wiped them out.

We did the helicopter ride over Kilauea during our Hawaiian cruise. Things were pretty calm (but still awe inspiring) the day we went. We missed being able to see the lava flowing into the ocean by 3 days.

Wrong. That would be Tambora, whose eruption in 1815 was on the order of 10 times larger than the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, and caused 1816 to be "the year without a summer" in Europe and North America.
