I agree with many points that you bring up! Excited to see how the characters develop further in the next one.

Great review of this! Obviously I was less bothered by some things, but I do hope to learn more about the magic system in book 2. I have some vague suspicions about things based on the fact that she uses magic partly as a symbolic thing, but I don't know if it's fleshed out enough to discuss here.

I've read A Children of Blood and Bone and I agree with a lot of your thoughts (you worded it better than I could have!). I'm excited for the next book. I think the last point you made, will be resolved in future books, though I was confused about it as well.

I agree with you about the characters, Jade. I too felt like something was missing with them. Can't say I LOVED any one of them (didn't dislike them either). Zelie was super impulsive and selfish, Zel was a good brother but sometime a little too he-man for me... Agreed, saw the romance coming from a mile away and I think if it was slow burn it would have been much more effective when certain things went down.

I'm like swimming in my library holds right now. I'll definitely pick up the audiobook when I get to this one!

If you'd like to try something else that has a sort of religion-based magic system, The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is extremely good. It's got a system of pagan Russian gods (similar to the various little gods in Spirited Away), and has the dark fairy tale atmosphere of Uprooted with the strength of main character and political intrigue of And I Darken (it's also set during the Byzantine/Ottoman empire, although during the 14th century rather than the 15th). I think you'd really enjoy it!

I really loved this book! But I wouldn’t say it was without flaws as well. I think it was really really long for a fantasy read, and sometimes unnecessarily so. I was also so confused about the festival thing too! The romance went pretty fast but I liked how the relationships became toxic because of it. I actually didn’t like Tzain that much because I felt like he was a little bit too perfect but I loved Amari so much! I would say there was a lot of depth though. More so it shines through the themes and the characters thoughts and actions because of those themes... I am definitely looking forward to the next book and I am glad you enjoyed it even if you had some problems with it!

Finally someone who likes Tzain, too!

I think the character development felt a little rushed which is probably why I felt the characters while interesting didn't have as much depth as they could have had
