I like that you had an alternative book you recommended in your review

Finally someone who doesn’t blindly love this book. I tried to talk about how I didn’t like it during my schools summer reading discussion and with nothing but my own thoughts bouncing around my head everyone just ignored the fact that it really is as spicy as flour.

We live in a world where stories need to be discussed. Good or bad, the discourse is how the author receives their best tribute. Every poorly received story is a growth opportunity. Unfortunately we only grow with water fuel & nurturing of the craft.

I enjoyed the book because it was something fresh on the scene; black YA fantasy about a black young woman by a black woman. that type of book is rare. The social themes that a lot of black woman have to face being addressed in the book were great: colorism, sexism, destroyed cultures, corrupt governments, etc. I think it hit home being that I'm a Black woman in America and have faced these issues and now there is a book addressing these issues in a creative way in a lucrative industry where more people will at least start to think about the issues. It would have been great if the book could have been a successful stand alone but I do want to see where the author will try to lead the series. But I do hope it doesn't lag because I will fall off. I have BINTI on my list to read which seems to be a well received scifi black female centered series.

I'm scared to watch this because I have such high hopes for CBB. After Waching: ok, that wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I still wanna read it. But I agree that fantasy is more romance than adventure nowadays and it makes the fantasy aspect almost into a subgenre

Thanks for recommending The Kishi!
Honestly, if it weren't for the setting and the afro-mythology I wouldn't have even picked it up or made it through to the end.
It reads very much like a first novel. Nothing I haven't seen before. Nothing wowed me. (And fantasy, of all genres, should have an element of wow)
I don't think it was bad per say. Just not good. She's an okay writer, but there's nothing special or unique about her style or story execution.

Hi! Yeah I'm 5 years late but I'm French and just came across this book! I'm half-way through it and as much as I wanted to love this book, I'm not enjoying it. The story is very predectible and YES, you just pin-point what was bothering me but I couldn't express it: It is the last air bender with black characters!

🤔... reminded me why I haven't had the urge to pick up the 2nd book. Other than the title and cover intriguing me, I don't think about the book, I'm not connected enough to go back and find out what happens to it's conclusion. There are so many 1st books in series and trilogies I've picked before and after reading this particular one that I am still thinking about, characters I still wonder about. This book did not leave me feeling that way at all, I was annoyed... I remember that feeling, and I don't want to repeat it...
Have me courious about The Kishi.

I've never read an African fantasy novel but The Kishi is definitely on my list. Gr8 review.

I think the issue of sequel bait is not particularly valid. She is world building because she is planning exploring and revisiting. So many fantasy authors go back to their well established world's they created. I watched avatar, both series and didn't even notice a complarison. I wonder if this guy would be so passionate if the book wasnt popular. I had some issues with the book but overall I liked it and I recommend it. I look forward to exploring this world again in another book.

I have a slightly different take on this as haven't read the book yet so I can't comment on that side of it, but IMO, it's the immense hype that has probably ruined this book for some readers. From what I understand from many booktube reviewers, it's a super tropey predictable YA fantasy with a strong romance element... and is in the same space of perceived mediocrity as many of its peers that don't get called out for it. BUT, it's written by an African author, about (fictitious) African people in a (fictitious) African country and was pushed far too heavily as the next 'great' YA fantasy so has attracted more attention that is usual. Because it *is* groundbreaking, it's expected to 'represent' African (YA) fantasy as a whole and when it doesn't live up to certain expectations, well we can see the results in some of the reviews.

Some people who have read this and disliked it or who follow others that have read and disliked it will automatically be turned off reading something 'similar' (ie written by an African, set in Africa with African characters) in the future and that pisses me off. Non-white, specifically black, authors and their books are not a monolith and I really wish that a certain subset of society would stop with that mentality.

As for the whole Nora Roberts debacle, well there is no defence for Tomi's ignorance on that. She is certainly intelligent enough that she should never have f****d up as she did, but a) where was her PR machine through the whole thing? and b) what happened is a prime example of the effects of the immediacy and toxicity of social media if you don't THINK first.

A long time ago, when everyone was promoting it and expecting it, I think someone mentioned the fact that the rights for an adaptation were already bought when the book was not out yet and... I've heard a lot of people saying that they'd love it better on screen and I can't stop thinking that maybe that was the author's goal? I mean, her main goal is to write, she's an author, but maybe her work would be more suited for screenwriting? It did not came out how I wanted to, I'm not fluent in english and it really shows today :(
I ended up buying the book months after the release and I've been kicking myself for it since because I KNOW that hyped books, especially fantasy, doesn't really work for me but I wanted to support the author... I tried to read it but wasn't in the mood so I put it down nd now I'm thinking about unhauling it 😅

You just took every word and feeling that I felt about this book. I was a bit conflicted reviewing it because it's like "Wow. This is a young black author and I want to support her but OH MY GOSH this book is crap". It was very film-like and the multiple POV was just over kill and I couldn't connect. I got it as a birthday gift. And then after the whole "You stole my title mess" I returned the book and gave my friend her money back.

Haha just listened to the audiobook a few days ago and yeah, it was kind of boring at times and definitely overhyped. I hated the romance and the prince character. So annoying. I think I have it 3 Stars (average), but as the days have gone by I feel it’s more of a 2.5 (leans towards the I didn’t like it side of the scale).
I had looked for rant reviews on it but didn’t really find any so I’m glad you made this video. Hope they don’t crucify you for it lol

Did you by any chance listen to "Money Box Live: The Economics of Being an Author" on Radio 4?
It was pretty interesting to hear how some indie authors are making a good living from self-publishing.
With mainstream publishers chucking out so many boring cookie-cutter novels these days, I reckon the future could well be indie.

I just finished it last night, and I was frustrated with it too. That YA style of multiple points of view in first person present tense drives me nuts. It did have some beautiful moments, but it was overhyped and overlong.
