Youre pretty much spot on to how I felt about the book. I couldn't stand Inan's PoV or how the romance involving him developed. Like I understand life threatening events may make you fall into lust, but you were just trying to kill EACH OTHER moments ago! Also, a touch predictable as you've mentioned. I still enjoyed most of it even if parts made me roll my eyes, LoL.

Did you read the authors note at the end it's so poignant and beautiful

Okay, I agree with Inan being annoying, but honestly I have a theory as to why he was so back and forth. So, you know how he could get into Zelie’s head? What if his positive thoughts about magic was her mind seeking into his thoughts??? Idk, just a theory. I do wish he would’ve been a true hero and actually changed, but oh well. I really love reading about flawed characters and I think showing his POV was important to better understand him

That turn of phrase from poetic/flowery to "colloquial" is a hallmark of afrofuturism. It's just how we write and it's one of the things that seperate us from regular sff

I really wish inan's story wouldn't have ended the way it did . I liked him and I feel like he was just lost and maybe with time he could have changed .

i really agree with what you meant about the characters being too wishy-washy. at first i was like "okay i get it, yall are doubting yourselves/what might happen in the future" but their repeated doubt got me annoyed bc it seemed like the development those characters had in previous arcs went to waste. but then, it got me to realize how realistic it actually was bc honestly, all of the MCs in this novel had severe emotional & mental scarring, and it was so evident that what they did/thought was bc of this., which is what made me less irritated keeping that in mind. with that being said, Inan is the exception to this. he saw and felt all of the things Zelie went through, the things his father did to diviners and just when it looked like his character was redeemed, he went back on all of that i get that his father's recognition was what he yearned for his whole life, but he really did not have a heart at all if he could see how terrible his father was, change, and then just go back on that so quickly. like what the Fuck. from the way he talked about Zelie i really thought there was a chance he'd choose Zelie over his duty... but nope, his father got into his head and his false hopes lead him to, hopefully, his death. and you know, i honestly am such a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope so yes i was screaming when they finally actually kissed bc this build up of him trying to reject his magic to me was almost like a metaphor for how he was too afraid to know more of Zelie bc he knew he'd get attached to something he wasnt supposed to. and ofc, duty before self, which is what he ended up choosing ://// if Inan truly loved Zelie, there's no way he'd stay by his father's side after he tortured her and HEARD those screams and saw her in that state. and bringing her baba into it was just the last straw, i really hope he's dead bc he toyed with My emotions too UGH. -end of rant-
plus im so happy Amari became a maji bc i know she'd make a great one!! also #AmariForQueenofOrisha 💖💖

I agreed with a lot of what you said! Also I didn’t feel like we got enough of the world especially with the animals - and I feel like calling them leopardaire or pantheraire or whatever was a cop out

How to pronounce “Zélie”

P.S I really loved your book review! Keep up the good work!

Oh my god SAME. Inan was so annoying I wish I could skip all his parts but then I don't want to miss anything crucial to the plot.... That said the writing, world-building and everything else is perfect, so I guess the lack of endearment I feel with most of the characters is redeemed.

SPOILER ALERT

I was confused about the ending!!! So does Amari have powers?!?I hope she is a Tider!!

And Inan...yea let's not. Got on my FRIKIN nerves. I would have shipped him and Zeilie is if happened in the next book and not the first one. It was too fast.

And tzian. SO BORING. He had like no depth or personality for me to care about him. And I've been pronouncing his name like "ten-zin"

Inan is the most infuriating character ever! Got me literally ripping my hair out. His relationship with Zelie felt so fake with the kisses and the promises. Love the book though. It has a special place in my heart.

YAY! I'm so happy to hear you loved it. I'd already ordered the book on Amazon some days ago and it's supposed to arrive next Monday and from everything I've heard about it it sounds like it's right up my alley.
I'm fucking excited to read it.

I haven’t finished it yet so I can’t watch the whole video yet BUT, I’m very glad you enjoyed it and are promoting it! I got to hear the author talk on some panels at Yalwest a weekend ago and she’s sooo fun! I’m really excited for what else she has to write!
