What Insurance Companies Know About You

Insurance companies are collecting vast troves of data about nearly everyone. Their privacy invading practices are well documented and greatly exceed what most people realize including buying data on your credit card purchases, TV viewing habits, and social media posts. Whether you are buying health insurance, home insurance, life insurance or auto insurance, your insurance company is probably engaged in surveillance capitalism and collecting much more data on you than you would ever imagine.

I watched Naomi Brockwell's video a couple of days ago and had my wife watch it as well. I told her if we can get Steve Lehto and John Stossel to cover the topic, maybe a groundswell of public outrage will lead to Congressional action. Then we laughed . . .

Protecting privacy on an individual basis is needed due to privacy being eroded when you don't protect it. A legal maxim (of equity) applies: "Equity aids the vigilant, and not those who slumber on their rights." A real world example of this is that those whose homes' have a privacy fence obtain a right to privacy (4th Amend.). Those who do not have a privacy fence, do not have a "reasonable expectation" of privacy.

If these companies have this sort of info on everyone, what stops them, or a bad actor within, from using this information to "influence" those that create laws, enforce laws, make judgements and grant massive contracts? Perhaps that is why we still don't have any laws against this sort of thing?

Any monitoring device which the insurance companies offer to lower your rates eventually will be used to manage your behavior through threats of price hikes and policy cancellations.
