Can Anything Be A Bear Cartridge?

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Buffalo Bore on their website shows where a Guide had a 9mm using their Cartridge stopped the Bear

If you get proper expansion in the bread basket its going to do the trick.
For a charging bear, anything that can break its bones will be better than nothing.

Lots have been taken with .30-06 rifles. I'd want something bigger at close quarters. Maybe a minigun? Or a quad .50? Talking browns or grizzlies. Other than a wounded black bear or mama with a cub or 2, my .30-06 would be fine

.270 win with federal vitalshok 130 grain copper at a 25 feet distance blew a 2” diameter hole completely through my bear this year. He barely ran 30’, I’ve never seen such a large hole cavity before. He had a 24” wide chest cavity.

If I ever hunt bear I’ll either use a 350 legend. 20 gauge slug, 30-06, 7 rem mag or a 300 wsm. For defense against charging bears I’ll use a 10mm or a .460.

I like the old 45 90. I had an 1886 Winchester in that.

Ah the "bear cartridge" it has been lots of fun to play with this concept for many of my decades and it was a fun topic before I could read and shoot. Having been on the attempted receiving end of single minded bears, and having been present while others dealt with bears, black, brown and polar Bill's advice is the best. Pick your cartridge, pick your delivery system and become extremely proficient. Way more meaning to life with bears as the target. I hope this "bear cartridge " promotion keeps rolling on. How about a 5.56 NATO? I knew a man who killed many polar bears with it.

I got two guns that'll defeat a bear. They're called my left and my right 💪😂💪

Phil Shoemaker is the one who stopped a bear with that 9x19 buffalo bore 147 gr hardcast, I believe.

Bullets are bullets at the end of the day. It's just about matching the type of bullet to the purpose and the rest is pure marksmanship. Most don't like to admit it because most aren't very good marksmen.

in the late90's AK game, fish and wildlife put out a chart on best bear defense 30.06 beat all 300s at the time.

Talking about sneeking up on behind a bear to make shot. I thought what you said was humerus don't know about a charging be what would be a good bullit to slow down the charging bear. Lol!

What he said, it's the Right 45-70 in the right place for Grizzly! It's the right 30 caliber in the right place for black bear. And it's the right buffalo bore 10mm in the right head for any of them.

Something to be said for a Benelli R1 Pro Big Game 30-06. Has 10rd magazines and is Semiautomatic. Could be useful with the right bullet too. Maybe a Hornady ELD-X 178gr 30-06.

I have killed them with several different cartridges, including Muzzleloaders. Yep, shot placement is key. A large caliber handgun or shotgun for trailing wounded bears.

I have used a soft tone, friendly attitude and non threatening body language to stop a charging Kodiak bear. I also threw my days salmon catch to him then backed away and ran like a jackrabbit.

I've read lots of guys used a 308 in Alaska for any big game back in the day. Heck I bet many bears have fallen to the 3030

Canadian Rangers switched from .303brit to .308 a few years back. If it wasn't effective i doubt theyed carry it.

Had a work friend that went to Kodiak Island and went brown bear hunting with a 700 Rem mag. I thought that was a little on the light side, but he came back with a bear, big one, put the bullet right behind the bear's ear.

For black bears my pick is the .30-30. We hunt with hounds and only kill a bear if it’s mean and fighting on the ground. At distances inside 15 feet with hounds all over the place the .30-30 is absolutely perfect. Punches into the skull but rarely exits. Makes it a good round for when things get western.

Charging brown bear a claymore may stop one.
