WHEN asked ‘how did you meet?’ Adriel and Monae Alvarado’s story is like no other. The couple met at SCI (State Correctional Institution) Chester, a medium security male prison in Pennsylvania. Both Adriel and Monae were inmates who first exchanged glances in the prison laundry. Monae identified as a trans woman and had already started to take hormone replacements before entering the prison but she hadn’t yet had surgery. When Monae and Adriel got together they came across opposition from both in and out of prison. From the staff and fellow prisoners inside the prison to family and fellow gang members on the outside world, the couple’s unlikely love story left a lot of people with a lot of questions. Over five and a half years later the couple have finally reunited on the outside world with Adriel finishing his sentence and getting ready to start a new life together with the wife he has yet to live with.

She got and maintained a home for him to get out to. That's some loyalty.

The way he looks at her, like she's the only woman in the world. Just beautiful, I hope to find that kind of love one day

The way he looks at her is very sincere. Everyone needs someone. This world is too mean to be alone.

The strength for these two to stay together in a prison environment is seriously impressive. It's so genuine. Who would go through that kind of hell for the woman he loves? Dude got jumped and beat up and kept going. The loyalty they show for each other is pretty damn amazing. They've served their time I hope they live the rest of their lives happily.

I never seen a transwoman that's not caked with makeup. She got that natural beauty.

She is super feminine I wouldn’t have known that she was born a biological male. No need to be insecure sis 💪❤️

For him to be so sincere about her is amazing! He didn't try to hide the relationship or attraction. He didn't allow conditioning or a gangster ideal of who he was supposed to be with stop him. That is some real strength and growing up.

Her voice doesn't sound too obvious and her physical looks is passable as a natural born female. In public, they look like just your average straight couple.

I cannot believe how they risk a transgender woman's integrity and life by sending her to a male prison. I hope she had her own cell at least.
