Now, while countries like the UK and Israel are going back to normalcy, Germany has been under some form of lockdown for over six months. How did Germany, a country known for its efficiency, love of planning and rationality lose control of its COVID-19 response?

I live in Germany. My husband emailed his health insurance here about an issue. They sent him a letter by post just to say thank you for his email and they will get back to him shortly. I think that sums up German efficiency!

I still use a fax machine because there's no other way to contact few of the government offices in Germany other than calling them via Telefon.

FYI, Germany was never known for its "efficiency"... its known for "overengineering" a problem....

My feeling is that many things in Germany are over-engineered but under-delivered. I lived in a building in Germany which had all the latest tech for opening and closing the front door. However, the door remained broken, failing to perform its basic function which was security, and because these 'gadgets' needed to be maintained and fixed all the time the rent eventually went up also. All this for a front door? Similarly, there were a lot of discussions at city, local, state and federal level about the pandemic, but nothing was actually being done.

Based on the comments read, this isn't only Germany. I know its very much the same faults here in Canada.
You start administering the vaccine in a city of 800 000 by making those in their 80s and 90s get down to a single central site?

the biggest problem is that germans are *always* dissatisfied with *everything* . and everything that goes wrong is *always* somebody else's fault .

I've been to Germany many time in business trips. Germany had been known to me that they've got world class scientists and engineeras in technological innovations. Something I started to pick up. Nonetheless, I live in an area in Pennsylvania where local clubs require that you send actual mail and check for membership 😜

Oh Germany, get with the program it's year 2021. I currently live in Germany I have to say the bureaucracy here is terrible. Everything is mailed and trying to get an appointment at foreigners office is slow.

Here in god forsaken Philippines, we received sms from loval government before your vaccine appointment. Wow. This is surprising and I understand why Germans are very hesitant with digitalization.
