I typically split the difference and go for something labeled “satin”, which is typically just a tad less glossy, but it keeps the blacks very rich

I use gloss varnish but I've been curious about the matte. Your side by side comparison is great. Thank you.

The best straight to the point video that really shows the difference clearly, that was very helpful, thank you!

In my opinion the glossy is better in most cases because it adds a coherent element of light and makes less dull the areas with absence of light, light hits the surface of the painting bouncing onto the glossy varnish which makes it deep. Varnish is part of the painting process, cannot be left to chance

I opted for glossy on some of my paintings, I like the effect it has. The only drawback I noticed was photographing the painting outdoors can end up looking too shiny.

Straight to the point, with visual representations. Good video.

What a helpful helpful demo. Thank you. It’s especially helpful having a symmetric painting like this to compare one side vs the other.

I agree - glossy. I use acrylics and it makes the colors really pop~

Wow! I was definitely leaning toward satin or matte varnish because I didn't want my portrait painting to look too shiny or have glare on it. But judging from this video, glossy is what I'd want! I definitely want the effect of the darks becoming darker and color more intense. My painting looks very flat and it needs all the help it can get. Do you find that this is true across all brands, including Gamblin brand Gamvar varnish?

I've been trying to choose between finishes for when my recent paintings are dried enough, this was super hellful!

I love the effect of the matte it gives it a "moody" field. Does that also apply to acrylic

This is the best explanation I’ve heard! Can gloss varnish be placed on top of matte varnish to restore the deep colors?

Thank you, I think you helped me make a decision on which one to varnish my pieces.

Can you re-varnish over a matte varnish with a gloss?
