I ALWAYS de-lint my rollers. Get a big strip of ducttape and roll roller over the tape it until it stops picking up fuzz. I go through about 6-10 ft of duct tape to do this, but it makes a HUGE difference just, fyi

THANK GOODNESS! I’ve been searching and asking for this exact demonstration. And, in black✔️ My roller handle came with foam but I took a leap of faith and ordered 1/2 inch nap, last night. I don’t need to go in the same direction?! No, I’m not painting wood. So helpful AND such a relief. This project is kicking me while I’m down.

I learned a hack that I have yet to try because I can’t get the paint right but a furniture painter, sorry I forgot who or I would give them credit.
Anyway, she said to mix a bit of the paint you used into the poly coat and that helps insure that you don’t have streaks or in my case, it’s sort of an unevenness. I can’t explain my struggle but it’s real! I’m ready to tackle this project, once AGAIN.

I think foam rollers were used (before paint spray guns were on the market) for painting drywall when the customer wanted a L-5 (level 5) finish. That is where the entire surface area of drywall is coated with drywall mud and the mud is spread slick/flat. After it was dry and sanded, the paint would be applied and it also had to look flat/slick. Foam rollers were used for that b/c they apply the paint much flatter/slick than fabric rollers. But then came paint spray guns and they apply paint even flatter than foam rollers. You probably cant see the difference as well when painting wood but if you paint over a piece of drywall that has mud spread even and slick and then paint one piece with a fabric roller and the other with a foam roller, you can see how fabric textures the paint more so than foam does. So it would be self defeating to have drywall installed with an L5 finish (which costs more and is more time consuming) and then paint it with a fabric roller, especially one with a high NAP (higher the NAP the more textured/less flat the paint will be).

Great explanation! I especially liked the bubble popping and finishing after you rolled out the clear coat. Thank you.

"...if you have a Menards in your area..."

That line broke my heart. I moved to Florida and Menards is one of the things I miss most about the Midwest.

That's point of foam roller for a more fine finish it's not for coverage, u wouldn't use foam roller on plain pine, use foam on already covered area to get fine finish, like on cabinet doors

Awesome info! Thank you so much! I've been debating on fabric rollers since they're more expensive. I don't mind paying a little more for better quality.

This is good, and just to add: try wetting out your rollers before painting and to combat the fuz try wrapping tape around the roller and then peel it off the remove loose lint and fabric, lastly waterborne clear coats will, a significant amount of the time, cause white pigments to yellow like within hours. great vid thanks

It can help with new cloth rollers to wash them with clean water and spin dry with a air hose this gets any lose nap out before you paint

I’ve always found it confusing that so many advocate the cross-hatch or W method of application, because whenever I watch professional painters apply paint to a wall, they always go in vertically straight overlapping lines and don’t do the cross-hatching technique. Quite an enigma.

Will a foam roller do good on painting a truck. I got one coming but from what I see online it doesn't look as good as spraying with a hvlp spray gun or a electric sprayer but painting now would have to paint inside with all the pollen outside now and even more the windier it gets.
