Our How to Tile a Bathroom Wall will give you all the help and advice you’ll need to do this job well. There’s even advice on how to tile in and around a window recess.

This video explains in easy-to-understand terms how to creating a tiled wall that’s durable, water-resistant and attractive. Starting with how to calculate the number of tiles for a given space, it tells you how to lay out your tiles, make a tile gauge, cut tiles to shape, apply adhesive, finish with grout and clean. There’s even advice on how to tile in and around a window recess.

Preparation & planning

Before you begin tiling, your wall surface needs to be sanded, cleaned and fully sealed. You also need to check whether the tiles themselves need sealing before they’re laid (it depends on what they’re made from). If you have to tile around a window, take this into account from the beginning.

Aftercare

After finishing your tiling project, use a grout protector spray to stop penetration by water, dirt, oil, grease and lime scale. Using this product will help to prolong the life of your grout and keep the area easy to clean.

Getting the job done - hints & tips

Make sure all surfaces are prepared before tiling. Porous surfaces should be prepared using primer before tiling. Always make sure your grout and adhesive is in date if you're using product which has been left over from another project.

Safety

Before screwing battens into the wall always check for pipes and wires which may be in the wall. If there are pipes or wires behind the walls where you are intending to screw down battens, make pencil lines to act as a guide rather than battens.

I have literally learnt more from YouTube videos than I did at school ...

I love these videos because everything always looks so straightforward when they have such a freshly plastered, square room with minimal obstacles, which are good for illustrative purposes, but then I look at my real-world bathroom with all its awkward corners, non-straight walls, sockets, etc. and the job suddenly becomes very daunting again!

Thank you so much. We ordered a contractor for a small bathroom hack and retail . He did such a bad job, aswell as delaying and ignoring our calls. We decided to finish the rest our selves. The work we did seemed to be significantly better than what he did aswell as fun. This video really helped a lot thank you!

One of the most important parts you did was keying in the substrate before you directional troweled.... and you didn't even mention it....cool video, good work!

I used this thanks. The batons are a good method if you get straight timber and spend time mounting it perfectly on the wall.

I think my tiler used this video and mixed the adhesive by chucking it in a bucket and mixing at full speed without covering the floor!

Excellent video. I feel like schools need to come to YouTube for their learning material because this sort of stuff is stuff kids should be learning. Also, is the narrator Ed Speleers?! Sound exactly like Ed Speleers...

So is it better to skim a wall before tiling or is it better to apply tiles directly onto fresh plasterboard?

I thought we were supposed to continue the tile around the internal corners? So it looks like a full tile in each corner?
