I have two p2 awd cars for 5 years now. One is broken money pit and the other one is best car I have owned. If it has bad ownership record just skip it. If it has been looked after you will love it. Sound alone is reason worth buying. 06-07 models have less electrical problems- those are the ones you want. Things to look for:
1. Engine
* do co2 coolant leak test for cracked sleeve or bad HG. Shim it or weld it if you crack it open. 81mm block is the only way forward for serous mods.
* pcv glove test at idle and under boost. Get the right one pcv banjo bolt if you don't want to grenade your engine.
* look for air, vacuum, exhaust leaks. 5 banger must work smooth.
* dismantle front radiator package and pressure wash it from dirt. Heat is a killer of these engines. If you want to increase power and still stay sensible- street drivable- reliable 350 crank hp is tops. Used original MHI TD04HL-19T is your best bet. No China ebay turbos or rebuild parts. If you can install meth injection.
2. Transmission
* autobox is better for everyday driving because p2 are heavy. 5speed is weak. Don't mod your engine if you have one. You will break it. Stock power lpt and 5 speed is comfortable for daily driver. Problems arise with elevated trans oil temps and hot weather. Before you buy test it when hot. 6 speed is much better with right valve body and seals. For both gearboxes get aux trans cooler and change oil regulary. T-IV oil only- no multi mix.
Haldex awd rule #1 if it works dont touch it. Usual problems- worn pump, bad pressure sensor, dem corrosion, clogged oil pickup, wrong oil. Proper way to fix bad haldex is to dismantle it. Lots of work and can be pricey.
Haldex rule #2 dont lauch and floor it in 1st and 2nd and when it is still cold. Get everything up to temp. Auto box pulls only from 3rd and upwards. Dont delete torque limiter you box will thank you for that. Angle gear splines are weak point yet you can make it stronger with correct mods. Best place to look for information is SE, NO, FIN, UK forums. Good luck to every future p2 owner. You will love it.

4:15 “I don’t see the point of owning a P2 if it’s not sorted”

I live in Sydney, Australia, and purchased an S60 P2 2.4L NA after lots of research into the car. Here in Sydney, there are only a handful of S60s, and I’ve only seen 2 S60Rs within the last year of me observing every car on the road looking for P2 Volvos lol.

I purchased this car as my first car, as it stood out to me beyond the usual Camry or Corolla options. I’ve had it for almost a year now, and even though you do say that P2s can be a money pit, I haven’t had this myself. The car has 193K kms on it, and I purchased it at 188K. I did a lot of research into it before, and understood that the car for the most part should be quite reliable. PCV was obviously something that many said could be a big issue though, although the car ran excellent and still does today.

I hope it doesn’t bite me in the ass later on, but right now, the car performs excellent. Since it’s a naturally aspirated B52 block, I know it’s gonna be reliable as ever, so I don’t mind giving it a bit of gas at traffic lights, as I’ll be continuing regular maintenance on the car with good intervals between oil changes.

The car itself is in excellent exterior condition, MUCH better than all the other S60s I’ve seen around here which are usually quite battered. I picked it up for $3800 AUD, which here you normally couldn’t anything of decent value in terms of vehicles… Probably an old corolla lol.

I have an Instagram for the car too HAHA. @zackd_vs60

I did wanna ask though as you seem to know a lot about Volvos (I only just found your channel). I recently installed a K&N pod filter in the car, replacing the stock air box. The air box had two hoses connected to it. I’ve done some research and found mixed opinions on what these hoses do. Regardless, one was blowing air out, so I bought a K&N crankcase hose filter and put it over this one. The other hose didn’t seem to suck or blow any air. I haven’t put any filter on this, but I feel it might be related to the PCV. I have it sucking in air from the engine bay, but I feel kinda scared that this might cause issues with the PCV, which could cost thousands down the line to fix. Do you happen to know what this hose is for, and should I be worried about leaving it open in the engine bay? Cheers, sorry for the long read.

You are better of buing a t5 awd and tuneing it. Those engines handles a lot more boost.
