Not only did her label drop her for getting pregnant, but they and her whole crew knew they were screwing her from the beginning. Very much a cautionary tale

A warning to young artists: When a record label picks you up in a limo, puts you up in a fancy hotel suite, and hosts a huge party to celebrate your new release, ALL of that is being billed to you. And it all needs to be paid off by your sales before you start seeing any money being paid back to you.

One of the saddest tweets she ever made was when someone asked her why she wasn’t rolling in money, she said “I flopped n now I’m broke.” And she wasn’t lying when she said that. I can only imagine the stress she has with all of this happening while trying to raise her son.

Tale as old as time. I think people are finally understanding that the advance is *Not Your Money*. When I was a kid, pretty much no one understood this; it took pretty much every alt band that weren't Nirvana or Soundgarden failing miserably to get the word out

Slipknot are the worst of these stories where successful acts are concerned. Dudes split 500k for 7 album deal among like 10 people...

Rule #1: NEVER SIGN A RECORD DEAL.
These days it's all about social media.
You can do all this on your own.
All the info you need is all here on the Internet.
At some point, you talk to a lawyer about setting up your publishing business and record company. That's it. Just be patient and write good stuff.

Keep up the good work, Weaver. You're the only guy who does reviews and news related to music production. I dig your shit.

Was presented a horrible deal memo back in the day and realized 1) signing a deal was NOT making it, it was just the beginning, and 2) the house always wins in the end. Before that day, computers were my hobby that I happened to have a job in, and music was my life, man. But music switched to being a very fun and important hobby on that day -- and I accepted the computers as my real job, and I never looked back. Decades later, I'm in IT in the music industry, lol.

Amen, amen, amen. They straight-up threw her to the wolves from day one. She could have been happier with just her streams and live shows here and there, and no deal ever.

I remember back in the day when they used to take new artists on crazy media tours and you’d see 10 interviews with the same outfit. I guess they really filmed back to back to back 😂

More videos like this please! Straight into it, informative, and interesting. I love it.

Great video and cautionary tale. Truly unlucky for her to land exactly in between the end of CD era and streaming in it's infancy stage. Labels will always think about their own business first and seem completely pointless right now unless you have said leverage. "All You Need to Know About the Music Business" by Donald S. Passman should be mandatory for every single artist trying to enter the industry. For their own good.

I have a buddy who works in contract law. Short story is 'know what you're signing' because every label Major or Indie can possibly screw you.

Steve Albini said the same thing about the majors 30-ish years ago. They never change.

Shes from the Bay Area and they have their own style. Thats crazy to describe her without mentioning any Bay influences

It's basically taking out a loan with an absurd interest rate and you have no source of income. So you agree to servitude to pay off your debt. This is what "selling your soul" in the industry REALLY means.

I appreciate Weaver's comedic delivery. It brings a lot of much needed levity into the space. And I'm digging this foray into the mini-doc space. That said I have followed Kreayshawns entire rise and fall, and watched a ton of videos and interviews with her. So since this happened to be a subject I am very familiar with, the areas he chose to highlight and the tone he took with a lot of areas did rub me the wrong way. I'll admit I am biased because I think Kreayshawn is based af. She is one of the realest most transparent people you will ever meet. She is a perfect example for this topic because the industry literally chewed her up and spit her the fuck out. But tbh the way she has carried herself through what would have probably completely destroyed many others is a testament to her character. She doesn't pretend to be anything she is not, probably to a fault. But that's what the people who fuck with her love about her. The takeaway here should be that against all odds this actually didn't ruin her life. Which says a lot about the kind of person she is. She still has a positive attitude and is still out here in these internet streets being her authentic self. It really admirable IMO.
I hope Weaver Keeps this up. But also hope he digs a bit deeper and puts a little more insight on the topics he wishes to discuss.
