What was the meaning and purpose of the 10 plagues of Egypt? Why did God send such devastating plagues on the Egyptians?

The tenth plague was also directed towards Pharoah himself since the king of Egypt was considered to be the firstborn of Egypt's gods by the Egyptians. This was the ultimate humiliation of Pharoah and the people of Egypt because it not only showed that was Pharoah unable to protect the people who relied on him the most, but it showed Pharoah that he was utterly and completely powerless against the One True God.

Actually there were eleven plagues. The last one was the destruction of the mighty Egyptian army. This fulfill two purposes, 1) eliminating the army meant the new Hebrew nation would not be harassed in future years and 2) this was a stern sign to the peoples of Canaan not to mess with the Hebrews whose God was very real. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Heb 10:31 Proceed at your own peril.
