The Bible tells us the meaning of life… And you’ve likely never heard the answer before…
The Bible shows it’s not just to live a good life now so we can end up as angels in heaven (Hebrews 2:...), stare at the face of God for eternity, or to be re-incarnated.. It does tell us that His plans for us are far more wonderful than than what we can fully comprehend in this life. (1 Corinthians 13:12) And the small glimpse we are given is profound, and it is life-changing.
So, let’s look at some scriptures that show the reason we were created and the purpose of life!
First, we see in Genesis, when God made the animals, He made each “according to their kind,” “the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind...” (Genesis 1:25). But when God and the One who became Jesus Christ created mankind, They made man in Their image!
Genesis 1:26-27 says, “‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’ So God created man in His own image... male and female He created them.”
You might say man was made after the “God kind.” We were made to look like God.
And after man was created, He gave him responsibility over the earth and everything on it. (Genesis 1:28) But God's purpose for man is actually much bigger than him just ruling this earth now! Hebrews 2 verse 8 shows that He actually wants man to rule everything that exists. But it goes on in the same verse to say, “At present, we do not YET see everything in subjection to him.” (v. 8)
In other words, God plans for mankind to rule the universe and everything that exists, but that is not yet the case. Because the resurrection has to happen first. 1 Corinthians 15 shows that those who have surrendered themselves to God will be resurrected at the return of Jesus Christ as spirit beings, no longer flesh and blood. Verses 35-38 compare this resurrection to the transformation from a seed into a plant. And Verses 42-46 say, “So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body…” Then, verse 49 says, “And as we have borne the image of the man of dust [that is Adam], we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man [speaking of Jesus Christ].” Going on to explain that “flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God…” (1 Cor 15:50).
When Jesus talked about this time in John 3, He said, “unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God… That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit...” (John 3:3-8). So we see we’re made in the image of God, We see God plans to give us authority over everything that exists And we see at the resurrection we are changed from flesh to spirit. Jesus calling it a rebirth. Born again, this time not with fleshly bodies, but with incorruptible, glorified, spiritual bodies, like the glorified Jesus Christ.
In Colossians 1:18 Jesus is called “the firstborn from the dead…” (Revelation 1:5)
Romans 8:29 says He is “the firstborn among many brethren,”
and Hebrews 2:10 says God is “bringing many sons to glory.”
Now here are some even more explicit passages about the purpose for our existence. In Romans 8 the Apostle Paul explains: “we are children of God, and if children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ... that we may also be glorified together.” (14-17). Paul is saying that Christians with God’s Spirit are certainly children of God now in the flesh, but he is also saying we will be reborn as spiritual, glorified children of God at the resurrection. Paul continues and says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Then he shows that the whole creation will be under our rulership as was mentioned in Hebrews 2! Roman 8:19-21 says “For the... creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God… because the creation... will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God…”Now let’s look at 1 John 3:2: “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”
The Bible shows: Every human being is made in the image of God with the opportunity to one day be born again with brand new immortal, incorruptible, glorified spiritual bodies, as full brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, and full sons and daughters of God the Father, to live forever as a part of the Family of God!
