the thing about luffy is that unlike most protagonists who are leaders (mostly because the story revolves around them or because they are the strongest), luffy is made to be the leader. on purpose, rather than by default. the crew gives him their strength so he can use it all to lead them to their dreams. i love the moment when he lists all the things he can't do in arlong park because it shows that he knows to delegate

I think the scene where Luffy punches a Celestial Dragon defines the simplicity of luffy better than any other scene; A guy punching tru the complex colonialism of the world out of pure anger and despise of what they represent to the common folk in the sea

Luffy’s explanation on why he’s not a hero is perfect

I'd point out that Luffy *knew* what punching the Celestial Dragon would bring. He apologizes after he does it, after all. Call it selfishness, call it his code, one way or another, he knew the consequences, knew who was coming, but couldn't keep himself from doing it because of what they had done to his friends.

I agree that Luffy ordering his crew to run was the best decision he could ever make. Being a good leader is knowing when to fight and when to flee. When faced with a threat that is much stronger then you and you know it, running away is the best option for the safety of you and everyone else around you. Yes Luffy is dense, stupid, a little selfish as times, and brutally honest but he is also kind, brave, emotionally intelligent, funny, supportive, inspiring, and one heck of a captain. This is why he's my favorite out of all the other straw hat members. I love all my straw hat babies but Luffy is by far my favorite. Yes my favorite is the mc, I'm basic I know but it's the truth.

What One Piece continues to succeed at, where Dragonball continues to fail at: “Consistency in its simplicity”…

You can understand Luffy emotions and thoughts through his actions. He rarely gives important speech yet we understand what he wants to say to his enemies.

2:40 that point about the traits not being inherent to Luffy is so key and overlooked, people really underestimate how impressionable young kids are. And Luffy saw the right thing in the right guy, and had the conviction to decide what would be best for him.

This is overlooked so much when it feels like it's just natural for Luffy to be the way he is, but we can see in little panels, one I remember is in Skypiea when he was about to punch Enel and had the bell stretch his arm completely back and you can see his face, in that moment he wants to let go of the bell

But immediately he remembers the faces of people for whom he's doing what he's doing, it's so subtle but says a lot, that even he is not this perfect guy who never falters, but someone who's also trying to align himself to his ideal everyday.

To watch my baby so miserable at Sabaody Island, and after that, Ace's death, broke my heart. Luffy is such an unique and amazing character. I love him so much.

The best thing about Luffy is that he never tries to be a hero in the big world. All he wanted is to do whatever he wants and every step he takes is towards that goal

Your point, "He gave them the ability to walk in the sun - to escape the darkness." that you mentioned, definitely aged well. I mean, Gear Five and all.

Just as Dresseosa is a microcosm of the end of one piece, Skypiea is a microcosm of all of one piece. A tyrannical ruler repressing opposing ideals, striking down outbreaks with a bolt from the heavens or wiping the slate clean by nuking the island. Luffy is not only opposed to this but actively fights back with a unique resistance to the great power's ability. Even the fact that the enemy is referred to as a god equates in both cases

I will say that, contrary to my initial thought, Luffy is an incredibly fun protagonist. Form years and years of just hearing about him and seeing him offhand, I never liked him. But once I started watching the show, his electric attitude really grew on me and had me rooting for him super quick. He’s just simple, a very morally grounded character that never strays from his own views even if it leads to conflict. He will go to the ends of the earth for you, and if you hurt his friends, he will find you and end you.

Everyone joined him willingly...

Luffy: Join my crew!!

Sanji: I refuse.

Luffy: I refuse your refusal!!

This video was a great discussion of luffy’s character. I liked how you used examples from the early one piece chapters not only effectively but with a different take. Would if I can use your video as reference for an essay I’m writing on luffy

Great video, a good summary of why i think that Luffy is the best mc a shonen ever had and one of the best mcs in general.
He's so simple on a surface level, but it's exactly this that makes him so interesting.
His convinctions are extremely strong and he always did everything he could to not let anyone or himself down.
What really got me was his love for freedom. It's very hard to put this into words (mostly because i'm not a native english speaker lol), but i will try.
One piece is exactly my idea of an infinite adventure, and luffy's love for it almost moves me to tears sometimes. Just look at that scene where rayleigh asked him if he wanted to know where the one piece was.
He's opposite to everything else you can expect from the world of one piece, just like you said. I'm not sure if this derivates from some kind of purity that shanks doesn't have (luffy never killed someone), but i'm inclined to think that it's not just that. His love for adventure and freedom isn't something he's obsessed with in a negative kind of way, but it's something he'll gladly share with anyone who wants to. He's pure light in such a corrupted world.

this video perfectly encapsulates why i get so damn mad when people just write this off to the plot armor or forced plot, when every single small little detail you could possibly ever want is explained piece by piece by the storytelling that oda has done over the years, which is also what impresses me so damn much, like, how it is even humanly possible for a singular person to think up this world, becuase in my opinion, one piece is, across all off fiction, the best story that has ever been told
