Katie (Barbra Streisand) tries to avoid Hubbell (Robert Redford) who is at a bar but he sees her and asks her to join him.

Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

Very natural, well acted scene. These 2 were so easy to watch together.

When he tied her shoe was very romantic to me at 10. That scene stayed with me for years, in my 20’s my crush untied my roller skates when we went skating at the beach. He had no idea I was dying inside ❤❤❤❤.

Great scene…and the mutual “crush” begins!

This scene highlights the differences in life philosophy and work ethic that pushed them apart in the end.

Maybe it shows that 2 people with different life philosophies and work ethics can still fall in love.... Love transcends all. Great movie!

Streisands character Katie is so fragile and self conscious almost as if she is not worthy of being in Hubbles world. Brilliant acting because the viewer feels the intensity of their interactions with one another.

Barbara played this role to the moon. Plus sang the soundtrack. She actually convinced me that R.R. was irresistible. She looks at him like he is to die for.

Can a person really act so convincingly? Barbara can. But perhaps she already had a quiet hidden (to the world) crush on R.R that contributed to this overwhelming realism. Anybody know?

It's been known to happen. I understand she and Omar had a fling that created an International scandal. She is as good an actress as she is a singer.

Leaves out the sexiest part where he ties her shoe lace.

One of the unusual elements of this film is that it concerns the love between two very intelligent people--played of course, but two very intelligent actors. They make a couple of dumb decisions in the course of their romance, but they keep their sharp wits about them through it all.

He represents very well, that's why he's Robert Redford. I can't represent any character other than myself, even though it's tough.

it's not a different work ethic as much as a different approach to life; they thought they could balance each other out. she never quits and he doesn't show that he is feeling and trying and wanting to participate, but that is why he chooses her so that he can find his way to be free and vulnerable and open like her; he loves her but he admires her and respects her and in the end it is his loss more than her heartbreak. i get it when he tells her later that she is too intense. i got that feedback all the time- people couldn't relate to why i pushed so hard. we just don't know any other way than passion, than the on/off switch, than the curly that comes out of us whether we iron it or not. she loved him and that is a tragic and gross understatement, but did she really see him? i think if she understood him and respected his quiet steadfast ways this would have worked, but then were would there be a story. sad. we want it both ways. a great love story that hurts instead of succeeds.

I can never respect the character of Hubble; he never even wanted to see his own daughter. So sad.
