This reminds me of a quote:"The bird which is caged it's entire life wonders how freedom is, and the brid with freedom wonders about the safety of being in a cage".

Greg: not enough freedom
Steven: too much freedom

Normal kids: doing homework, hanging out with friends, playing video games

Steven: fights in a FLIPPING WAR because his mom wanted to escape her life

Steven is literally going through every stage of anxiety and depression, he wants to find out who he truly is, and he doesn't know how to cope with

The sad part was that his dad was just trying to give his son “freedom” which was something that he didn’t grow up with. He lived in a world that stopped him from being him and he couldn’t bare to see his son suffer the same way

The problem was his dad grew up with too many rules and steven grew up with absolutely no structure. It doesnt hurt to have a little of both, I rarely heard greg say no to his kid. Children need structure at a young age, they’re little and dont know the difference between whats wrong and right sometimes. And saying no to them can save them a lot of future emotional turmoil.

The point of this scene was to show that both childhoods were bad

Steven’s dad (greg) grew up with no freedom always constantly getting shamed never being able to do anything he wants while Steven grew up in a van always going through hard sittuations and dangerous missions

I think its easier to understand Greg's position when it comes to his views on how to raise Steven when you understand that they aren't really his views to begin with.

To be clear, Steven comes from two worlds and should have had the benefits that came from both as his birthright, but that was never going to happen smoothly. And whatever Greg may have felt about how to raise Steven would have been overshadowed by the influence of the Crystal Gems.

His first child, without the support of his wife, family and with such a fundamental lack of understanding of gem culture, as well as his own insecurities about raising a kid considering his own childhood, we can understand why he may have been more easily persuaded by the gems to leave Steven in their care.

And I do mean persuaded, because Greg has always been shown to be an eager participant in Stevens growth, and wanting to be in his life, even to an extreme case in the episode where they duct tape the giant bubble formation that had a giant crack in it (I don't remember it very well, but i remember that part).

Greg is always being discouraged and undermined by the gems however, constantly being told that Steven is not like anything ever seen before and otherwise being ostracized by the gems due to their preconceptions about him and his capabilities.

To summaries, Greg probably would have tried harder to give Steven a normal childhood if he wasn't primed to believe that he couldn't do it, either because of his own capabilities or because it wouldn't benefit Steven.

Steven is right, he was raised with too much freedom and Greg would ALWAYS say yes to everything Steven would ask him

I remember seeing this the first time with my Dad then a few months ago we saw it again he said he related so hard to what Greg said. It was then I realized he regretted his approach to raising his kids, about as much as I regretted never telling him anything. Then only a few weeks ago I learned my Mom didn't know how to be a Mom cause she never had a motherly figure in her life. It was just me and my Dad in the room when both conversations, but rewatching these episodes just makes me relate so much with what Steven says and goes through.

Greg’s childhood might have been difficult never being able to be authentically himself, but Steven is totally valid in the way he feels. Steven was emotionally and physically neglected his entire life. Not to mention he was parentified by every adult in his life.

To be honest, after the crash, Greg handled it in a very good way in my mind. He let's Steven know that he's proud of him for speaking his mind, something he could never do. It obviously doesn't get through to Steven, but it's still there and 100 times better than being mad at him

This entire episode is proof that kids need a balance between freedom and rules. Too many rules and your kids ends up like either Connie or Greg, Doing things behind your back and if not fixed, cutting you off entirely.
Not enough rules and your kids end up like Steven, feeling like they don’t have enough support from their families.
