This is one of the most *powerful* and *tragic* unfinished lines in SUF. *Steven feels like he doesn't deserve love* if he's not actively contributing something to a relationship, and is fighting with his subconscious fixation that he *"needs to be needed"* . He doesn't know who he is as a person without his friends in the picture.

This is largely due to the extremely poorly handled process of his growing up. The gems nearly never bothered to check in with Steven and treated him like an adult with adult-level responsibilities and mentalities when he was still a _child_, still developing. Throughout all of SUF, *Steven desperately tries to keep himself from being a "burden"*, feeling he will lose his friends and family's love if he shows how vulnerable he truly is. "I'm fine! Everything's fine, " he constantly insists. But pretending like it is when it's not not only prevents him from facing the root of the problem but builds on the ideology that his loved ones have expectations for him now. His self-imposed purpose is to resolve others' conflicts and help along their development. He always puts others' feelings before his own, throughout the entire series. And if he ever lets his guard down and shows how broken he is, how much he feels like a failure, his one great fear is that the Gems, Connie, Greg, and everyone else will see him for what he believes he is:
