Tuned In Podcast 084: Going From Inductive Ignition to CDI and Gaining 500hp.

Bolting a 4000+hp twin turbo V8-powered drag car onto a dyno and pushing it to its limits isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s just another day in the office for this week’s guest, Anderson Dick of @FuelTechUSA.

-------------------------------
------------------------------

Founding FuelTech 20 years ago as an electrical engineering student in Brazil, Anderson started from absolute scratch with very little support and no other ECU products on hand to even take inspiration from.

The problem, as Anderson explains in this episode, was that extremely strict import regulations put the Brazillian motorsport scene a good couple of decades behind the rest of the world — so much so that enthusiasts were pulling EFI systems off cars and fitting carburettors in order to run forced induction. If that sounds backwards to you, Anderson doesn’t disagree, and took it upon himself to create what was then a very simple programmable EFI computer to try and bring his country into the 21st century.

Two decades later and FuelTech is a leader in the EFI management space, especially when it comes to extremely high horsepower drag applications. So, after Anderson talks us through the very early days of his career and the unique challenges he came up against, the conversation naturally moves to tuning big power cars.

Petrol vs Ethanol vs Methanol tuning, Inductive vs CDI ignition systems, reading spark plugs, and much, much is covered in this fascinating episode. If you want to pick up some new tuning knowledge from one of the best in the industry (we certainly did), this is one episode you won’t want to miss.

Great podcast. As a Brazilian and petrol head. It's amazing to see our technology spread around the world.

Anderson's story of how fueltech came to be is cool.

Loved this. Anderson is a champ and enjoyed the back story. Also great to hear his approach coming from a different and isolated market instead of being a trained ex Motec employee like a number of ecu offshoots. Different strategies and very interesting.

Andersons said his only issue with nitrous now, is that he physically cannot spray a higher volume of nitrous into the cylinders 😂 gotta love it

Mr Anderson, can you please ask Kyle from BoostedBoiz to upgrade his brakes on his Minivan? I used to leave comments about it, but I kept getting "clowned" on lol Dude is running super car power levels and throws all this cash into that van with stock ass brakes, mind boggling. Why risk your life and whole enterprise? I'm all about people doing what they want, but I was more mad about Ken's death cause it was over something stupid. I'd be just as mad about Kyle if he wrecked and unalived himself. I don't know if Ken's death was avoidable, but Kyle can definitely reduce his chances.

I'm only 34 and I guess my "old balls" are showing now, but dang I dont want to see Kyle hurt. I think he's definitely Pro enough now to take brakes seriously. He's got Cleetus's personal number, tell him to call him up and have his brakes upgraded to TBMs or something lol

Thank you Anderson and Andre for the great talk, every conversation Andre has with industry insiders, it lifts the tuner world to another level 💪✌️🤙

With regards to Inductive and CDI coils, inductive can have a shorter duration, many are 500-1500 ms, not 5000 micro seconds as he mentions. The difference between 200 and 500 microseconds is not that large any more with similar over all joule output.

We gained 800hp on a proline motor going back to the old points system, don’t tell anyone 😉. Great podcast so far!

Love these podcasts, how are you the only guy making podcasts like this at this level who gets all these high quality guests? Leave it to the Kiwi to change the game I guess.

If ignition and preignition is such a big deal with methanol prechamber ignition and maybe direct injection might be the future.
Less fuel on the walls to wash oil or preignite,
no exposed electrode so less of a hot spot and
much more reliable flame jet ignition.
As less meth is easier to ignite a passive prechamber would not be blasted by a direct injector, but naturally be filled by a leaner, easier to ignite mixture. I wonder if the low air fuel ratio would make it easier to get a reliable fill in the prechamber...

What a master class!!
And let’s be honest guys Motec, haltech, Link, emtron they are way behind in terms of technology and few of those are way behind in customer serve!
When tuners from this side of the world stop thinking inside they old box and start looking for ecu like they looking for new cel. Phone, with newest technology they will start getting better results.
