Gandalf v Balrog was a helluva long fight. As you said, for 8 days they fought in the pits under Khazad Dum but then they fought all the way up a massive staircase and fought for another 2 days and nights until "... at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside."
