They may be dead, but seeing Gimli angrily and readying his axe before the battle and says “Let them come, there is one dwarf yet in Moria who stills draws his breath” is just awesome for him to avenge their death.

It’s so sad to realize that Balin was one of the only Dwarves of the company to visit Bilbo regularly after their journey together. And then one day, he just never visited again.

Oin was also killed in Moria, by the Watcher in the Water

Whats even better is a little detail that i cannot decide if it was purposeful or not. It is said in the books that Ori preferred to write in Tengwar (elfish script) rather than dwarf runes. The book is mostly in dwarf runes as dwarves would be reading it, but the last line "They are coming" is written in hasty Tengwar

Moria hits different now... Before we did not understand Gimli. Now we felt the loss of his Kin 😢 We learn to love Thorin's Company.

For some reason it never clicked Balin was the Balin in the tomb of Moria — not until 4-6 years later

I know it’s obvious already for hardcore fans of books and movies, but it’s a punch to the memory to see once-cheerful and brave heroes from the Hobbit movies now laying around as long-decayed skeletons covered in webs and the dust of oblivion

Ken Stott played Balin perfectly
The casting was always spot on with Peter Jackson

Gandalf was also pretty gentle with the skeleton.

And Gimli was so looking forward to meeting him.

Balin was probably my favorite dwarf in the Hobbit movies. When I went back and watched Hobbit then LOTR I realized it was Balin then read up on it and was saddened. I didn't know that was Ori. Information like this really enhances watching the movies.

I believe all together there are 7 that are alive by LoTR Gimli’s father, Bifur, Bofur, Nori, Dori, Bombur and Dwalin. So not all a tragedy but so sad that a lot of the youth are gone by the time of the movies.

Always seen this as Tolkien stepping away form children stories. The hobbit was more of a childrens story so. He killed some of the characters in Lotr to show its more dark than before

Dwarf Fortress-esque movie about Balins colony would be sick

No grandeur story about saving middle earth or what not, just the rise and fall of one dwarven colony

i do love LOTRO for having a playable instance of last moments of Ori, writting down the words and going to fight an unwinnable situation during which the screen goes black and session ends

"They have taken the bridge, and the Second Hall. We have barred the Gates, but cannot hold them for long. .The ground shakes. . .Drums. Drums in the deep.. ..We cannot get out. A Shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out. . . They are coming."

The outcome of the dwarves is just the most heartwrenching to me in all the stories.

Richard Armitage's deep voice and performance really made the song
