Faith for Doubters - Episode 5
Has science made God obsolete?
Science has not made God obsolete, because the Christian view of God helped birth the field of science.
- "It is now the consensus among historians, philosophers, and even sociologists of science that real science arose only once in Europe. In this regard it is instructive that China, Islam, India, and ancient Greece and Rome had a highly developed alchemy, but only in Europe did alchemy develop into chemistry. By the same token, many societies developed elaborate systems for astrology, but only in Europe did astrology lead to astronomy." - Rodney Stark
- Christianity was critical in the development of the scientific revolution.
- Many early scientists were "devout Believers" in Christianity, and even more were frequent churchgoers.
Science has not made God obsolete, because the Christian view of God encourages exploration of the natural world.
- Early scientists believed you could love God by looking at the natural world.
- The Bible is the "book of God's word," but the natural world is the "book of God's works."
- 'When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? ' - Psalms 8:3-4
- 'The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. ' - Psalms 19:1-3
- 'It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. ' - Proverbs 25:2
- The Christian belief is that God defines truth, not humans in their own head, and that truth must be pursued, tested, and discovered.
- The Christian view is not a manipulation of reality, but rather a cooperation with it.
- Evolution has become more of a philosophical debate than a biological one. Even Darwin had challenges.
- Sometimes the book of "works" and the book of "words" seem to be saying different things...we have to investigate and discover the truth.
Science has not made God obsolete, because the Christian view of God reminds us science is PART of knowledge, but not the whole of knowledge.
- You don't need science to explain to you what is right and wrong. Objective morality can be felt more than scientific investigations.
- Morality is more universal than scientific advancement.
- 'For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; ' - 1 Corinthians 15:3-7
