This stuff is why I buy physical copies of the books I love. Hate how much these companies want to completely destroy the idea of ownership.

Practices like this actually promote piracy more than help fight against it.

And that is why we jailbreak. You swung first, Amazon. Got my entire library backed up and converted to EPUB, I bought them, I own them.

I stopped buying physical books when I ran out of physical space. Now I’ve over 100 e-books to save before next week. Appreciate the heads up, thank you Willow!

Anyone who hasn’t already ditched Amazon…please do it now

If buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing

I presume Amazon has notified none of its customers of this change. I'm an Amazon Prime member in the UK with quite a few Kindle versions of books and I certainly was oblivious to this action 'til seeing videos like this.

It's finally sinking in consumer's heads that they don't own the books they purchase with Kindle or with Kobo. Since Kindle wants to stop the downloads, they need to lower their Kindle book prices, and that can only happen if readers unite by restricting their purchases. Action needs to follow all of this conversation, Amazon doesn't give a squat about the talk, hit them in the pocket and maybe they will listen.

Months ago I decided to load all my books onto my laptop. I also purchased a Kobo Clara. Since Amazon has taken away my ability to do that I will never buy a book from them again. Thank you for informing those who did not know.

Me, a few years ago:
- Buys a Kindle, copies some of my already existing ebooks on it, uses it happily
- Makes an Amazon account and logs in on Kindle
- The Kindle starts showing ads because "Why not at this point? What are you gonna do, not use your expensive Kindle you bought with your Second World paycheck?"
- Says "Thank you very much!", factory resets Kindle and starts pirating books instead with spending nothing but my yearly local library fee on books
- Never spends a single cent on anything Amazon has
Me now:
- Stops feeling simply not guilty in the slightest, starts feeling proud in retrospect

My boyfriend was just about to buy me a kindle for late valentines. I asked for a Barnes gift card instead!

Thank you, I live in US & am a Amazon Prime member. I have not received notice about this - I came across your message here by accident & am glad!

I saw this on CriminOlly's channel yesterday and was really disgusted. I only buy physical books so it doesn't affect me directly, but this kind of move should concern us all. Removing true ownership of something you have bought - not rented - is just not acceptable. Download your books while you still can and switch to another company if you don't want to buy physical books.

I cancelled my prime account last month and all my kindle books disappeared. I had no idea I didn’t own what I purchased.

Amazon needs their ass sued. We should sue them. Amazon has no right to do this.

Amazon has always said you don't own the book, that you own a licence to read it, and that can be revoked. Always. This is not new. You have never 'owned' the books you purchased from Amazon. This is the reason I have always stripped DRM off all ebooks. Now I do own them and they can't take them away..

I’m surprised this didn’t happen ages ago.

They can’t touch my bookshelves.

A reminder that many libraries now have ebooks (and audiobooks) as part of their collection - you can check them out and read on a device of your choice at no cost - and without needing to visit the library physically.
I don't live in a big city and I was still surprised at just how big the offering is at my local library! Also I found out that some UK libraries allow loans of their digital titles on much larger territory than one might assume, so if you're in the UK, check the library in the major city near you, even if you don't necessarily live nearby!

Made the switch to Kobo a few months ago but still have my old Kindle and would occasionally purchase from there. Never again! Backup your books everyone. And get Calibre!

I subscribe to zero streaming services. I have been a loyal kindle user since 2010. I've had many different versions of the eReader. But I am now switching to Kobo. This stunt by Amazon was the last straw. I think it's going to cost Amazon deeply in customer loss and books sold.
