Sony A7 Mark II Hands-On Field Test (Featuring Kyle Marquardt)

Sony's A7 full frame mirrorless camera was our choice for best camera of the year in 2013. A year later, an update arrives with in-body stabilization and new design. To find out if this is the most capable mirrorless camera on the market, TCSTV's Chris Niccolls puts the A7 MK II to the test, and professional photographer Kyle Marquardt sees how the new camera compares to his DSLR kit.

Special thanks to Kyle Marquardt

Love Jordan's face when he disagrees or is waiting to talk.

This show is really getting better and better...we've got the Digitalrev TV, which is something like TopGear with cameras, we have Philip Bloom, who makes his reviews like piece of art. And then we have your show, which fits perfectly. I like that there is always this sort of "spark" between Chris and Jordan (just like in TopGear). I'd like to see something more than reviews though, some photo challanges? When both of you would pick one camera and then have some competition?

Chris is really trying hard to find things to dislike on this camera. I feel it's also because they've been reviewing a lot of Sony camera's lately. He's afraid to be seen as a Sony fanboy if he keeps praising their cameras lol. But this camera deserves the praise imo. Integrating IBIS is a substantial upgrade. Build quality is improved, better video codec and many smaller design problems of the original A7 have been resolved. Canon renews full frame cameras after many years without changing much. Sony did a lot in one year.

Their discussion at the end made me uncomfortable with them disagreeing.

I love the back and forth banter on this show.  it's very balanced and not overly heated.  I'm a canon user and I think the time is getting close to jump ship.

Coming from a full-frame Canon system, I am seriously looking forward to having a similar image quality in a smaller body. And I think with this camera, I've just found it!

Cant believe m watching this in late 2022.
Getting a deal with kit lens for 700USD, new seal packed.
I lost my camera and i just do images and not any videos.

These guys seriously have the most informative and practical camera reviews!  I like Digital Rev for entertainment, but I trust these guys when I actually purchase gear.  Thanks for the videos!

I honestly thought Jordon was going to thump Chris with that A7ii at the end

Chris and Jordan, I think you can amp up the agree/disagree bit some more. In Hawaii 5-O, Danny and Steve have carguments which is so popular with the viewers that the writers make sure they have them in every episode. DEFINITION: a cargument is a heated discussion while driving. Thanks for all of your reviews, I come here to find out what equipment is worth taking a closer look at.

Great video as always guys, Kyle was a welcome addition! Jordan, I was pleasantly surprised how good the FS7 looks even after compression on YouTube... Cant wait to see your review of that incredible machine. :D

I too am an avid Canon shooter and am always looking around at the competition to stay up to speed. Each release Sony makes is a step ahead of Canon at this point, but hearing from you guys and a field professional is very helpful. One of the by far greatest things about Canon, for me, has been that it works in absolutely every environment I shoot in: pouring rain, snow, extreme cold, extreme heat, disgusting humidity, harsh sand, etc. In all cases, my Canon 5D3, 7D2 are flawless performers. (The extra weather sealing on the 7D2 make me extra confident) Sensors aside because...honesty, I have yet to feel a Canon sensor hold me back in my work while countless internet hardasses think they're junk cameras, I just laugh.

Working in gloves is huge. I still don't enjoy the looks of that scroll wheel like Chris pointed out...honestly a deal breaker when I think about it hard. The ergonomis/menus of the Sonys killed them for me in the past. Being able to easily operate every function on a Canon in gloves is a great thing for many real world situations I can find myself shooting in each year.

Are Sony lenses weather sealed? That's something I'm not seeing advertised.

These are things that don't impact the owning experience of many users, which is why it's nice to see get his hands on one. I don't find myself in Antarctica, but he's pushing cameras to extremes that add enormous weight and credibility to his opinion. That comment on battery life?!?! Wow...what would I do when I fly in to a location that's near freezing?!?! Not work or keep swaping batteries all day?

Great review!

I love you guys, hands down the best camera related youtube channel out there! I like that you two don't agree on much, gives a wide and honest set of opinions on the products on display. Personally though i agree with Chris on one of the final comments about the high MP sensor needing to be on tripod.

The Minolta α-7 Digital of 2004 was the first dSLR with sensor stabilization. After 10 years the Sony α-7 II of 2014 was the first full frame mirrorless camera with sensor stabilization too.
