Question:
I’m filling my pool with well water. Are there special procedures that I should take into consideration?

Answer:
What is the difference between regular tap water and well water?
The main difference is that well water is not treated. You’re getting it straight from a ground, it is rich with minerals and metals and a whole bunch of other gunk you do not want in your pool. These metals and minerals will stain your pool wall and they can possibly turn your water brown.

Hose Bobby
The first thing we recommend is filtering water before it gets into the pool; we recommend the Hayward Bobby which screws onto a suction hose and filters out the iron and any other metals that lurk in well water. They come in two different sizes, a 10-inch bobby for up to 20,000 gallons or a 20-inch bobby for up to 40,000 gallons.

Metal Control
You can also control the metal in your pool water by using a cleverly named chemical called Metal Control. Basically, it’s a metal sequestrant which keeps the metal suspended in solution preventing it from leaching into the walls or the pool surface to prevent staining.

Water Clarifier
And if the water is still a little hazy, you can use another chemical that has an obvious name – Water Clarifier. Water clarifier simply makes fine particles clump into larger particles so they are easily caught by your pool filter. After the unwanted parts of your pool water are caught in the filter, either backwash or wash off the cartridges and you’re water should be a-ok.

Never thought I'd enjoy a video about filling a pool this much. Top notch.

The obvious question I didn't hear come up is: how does someone with a well know when they're approaching running their well dry? The last thing you want to do is have to call someone out to re prime the well pump, or, wait for it to re-charge.

Our pool is 14’x36”…around 3500 gallons, just a smaller Intex. Will the Hayward Bobby work for this? Just one? We used an RV filter but apparently should have swapped out while filling because now that it’s full and we’ve started the pump the filter is already red. We had major problems with iron last year too. We’ve drained it anyway because we moved it to level so when I fill this time I’d like to get it right.

Are those things you would recommend if it’s an above ground pool?

I have always been planning to have a swimming pool at the farm where there's no stream, and I believe except from the well. How best can this be achieved by well in a land where there's no power supply (electricity) ?

Filling with my well. Will only be adding about 3-5 inches per day, so I don’t deplete my well. When do I start adding chemicals? When it’s full or a little at a time as it fills.

I just read that you shouldn't use a garden hose to fill the pool because it could cause immense strain on the well pump, what should I use to fill the pool then?

What type of shock do I need for my pool if my husband keeps adding well water to prevent brown cloudiness and maintenance (algae prevention)? I keep trying to get him to use my spring water but for some reason he won't and I don't want to go through the brown cloudiness again!

Good basic information. We believe the TRIFECTA approach is the best way to deal with well water or bad city water. TRIFECTA uses three steps for perfect fill water.

1. Pre-Filter (Using the FillFast System is best) The FillFast uses a carbon filter to remove particulate. It also uses the patented CuLator filter to remove the stain-causing ionized metals. Together, they remove up to 90% of the metals coming from a well.
2. Sequester the metals (Try Super Start-Up from Periodic Products). Make sure your metal control does not use phosphate.
3. Use a CuLator Ultra 4.0 in your pump basket. This will eliminate any of the metals sequestered in the water. CuLator is the ONLY way to get rid of the stain-causing metals and keep your pool looking great all year. Just keep the CuLator Ultra in your pump basket for about 3 or 4 months to prevent any water discoloration and staining. You will love it!
