And that was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise. Unfortunately I think it was a bit too late for many of us, but I feel that the sentiment is not lost. It is merely true, like a person who sees a world to create and not just stones to line their path.

Important caveat: accepting a person's shortcomings doesn't mean accepting mistreatment. It means sticking around despite knowing there's room for growth of character. It means not running away at the first sight of an ugly side.
Mistreatment should not be accepted. That's different.

Agreed. At the same time, however, you would never accept that person’s failures, stupidities, etc., if there weren’t some initial redeeming qualities which made that acceptance worthwhile. In this analogy, that would be the beauty or the “fruit” of the environment which makes the trash worth dealing with.
